Ingredients
- 2 1 1/2-inch-thick New York strip steaks, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 teaspoons dried minced onion
- ¼ teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (Optional)
- 2 cups white rice
- 4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ½ cup canned sliced bamboo shoots, drained
- ½ cup canned sliced mushrooms, drained (Optional)
- ¼ cup chopped green onion
- ½ green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (Optional)
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce (Optional)
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- ¼ cup sugar snap peas (Optional)
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- ½ (10 fluid ounce) bottle oyster sauce
- ¼ cup chopped green onion
Instructions
- Place steak in a bowl; top with minced onion, garlic, and 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Stir to coat.
- Bring rice and 4 cups water to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir bamboo shoots, mushrooms, 1/4 cup green onion, green bell pepper, red pepper flakes, and 3 tablespoons soy sauce in the hot oil until green bell pepper is slightly tender, 4 to 5 minutes. Add steak, broccoli, and sugar snap peas; cook until beef is browned and no longer pink in the center, about 10 minutes.
- Whisk cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water together in a bowl until cornstarch is dissolved. Heat oyster sauce in a saucepan over medium-low heat; slowly stir in cornstarch mixture until sauce is thickened, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir oyster sauce mixture into steak mixture; sprinkle with 1/4 cup green onions. Cook steak mixture until sauce is thickened, 7 to 8 minutes. Serve over rice.

The flavor is there after I marinated the steaks overnight, but the meat is way overcooked using these instructions. At this point it’s basically overcooked pork. Nothing special, it’s really just stir fry.
I liked it but the meat lacked flavor. Next time I’ll marinate the meat in fresh minced onion, garlic, soy sauce and some fresh minced ginger root, for at least an hour. I’ll also cook it first – good meat doesn’t need 10 minutes. Stir-frying over reasonably high heat for just a few minutes is enough, then set the meat aside and do the vegetables, add the sauce ingredients, then I’ll add the meat back to the pan to heat it. I will give it another try with the above changes.
Taste just like restaurant style beef and broccoli! Absolutely amazing
I used fresh onion, garlic, mushroom and added fresh ginger. I did not have the flavor in the meat that I hoped for. Next time, I will marinate in the oyster sauce overnight.
Apparently this is a versatile recipe, as I was missing several of the vegetables and forgot to add the soy sauce the second time and it still turned out great. I used low sodium soy sauce on the meat and skipped thickening the oyster sauce. My kids and husband ate it up. Looking forward to following the recipe next time!
This was good but it was really salty, and I used reduced sodium soy sauce.
I used strips of boneless rib, minus mushrooms and red pepper. Loved it! I added sesame seeds for flair.
Quick easy recipe with great flavors. I used fish sauce and beef broth to create the cornstarch sauce.
Pretty good. I used pork since I didn’t have beef, and created a sauce with fish and hoisin sauce since I didn’t have oyster sauce. Hubs really enjoyed it and we ate it over rice with egg rolls. thanks for the recipe!
I did a few alterations, but the same idea and it was really good
