Easy Sweet and Sour Chicken

  4.3 – 175 reviews

Because of its sweetness, this cabbage soup will be a hit with kids, but adults will also appreciate it!

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 45 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  2. ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  5. 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch cubes
  6. 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  7. 3 celery ribs, sliced
  8. 2 green bell peppers, diced
  9. 1 onion, chopped
  10. ½ cup ketchup
  11. ½ cup lemon juice
  12. ½ cup crushed pineapple with syrup
  13. ⅓ cup packed brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Roll chicken in flour mixture to coat.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken; cook and stir until no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Add celery, bell peppers, and onion; cook and stir until slightly tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, whisk ketchup, lemon juice, pineapple with syrup, and brown sugar together in a bowl.
  5. Return chicken to the skillet, pour in pineapple mixture, and bring to a boil. Cook and stir chicken and vegetables in the sauce until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes.

Have tried many sweet and sour recipes that the family love. Unfortunately this is not one of them.

It was good. My boyfriend ate most of it!. I’ll make more next time. Thanks for providing a great recipe.

Easy to make, delicious and fun!!

This is so yummy. I made it with pork not chicken and added thinly sliced carrots. Super good.

This was absolutely amazing. So easy too!

Make it at least once a week, delicious

Delicious! I added some peanuts as a garnish before serving over some Basmati rice… just because!

This was a yummy dinner enjoyed by kids and grownups alike. I did make a few changes, the main one being substituting cornstarch for the flour, I prefer the way it coats and browns. I cut the lemon juice way down and added white vinegar. I was making a larger batch so I kind of eyeballed the rest of the ingredient amounts. I think this is a sauce you need to taste as you mix because there is a certain amount of personal preference when it comes to the sauce. We will definitely enjoy having this meal again!

I made it and loved it. I used this recipe, but the jar of Chinese Sweet & Sour sauce from the store for sauce an put over brown rice. Outstanding, especially if you just pineapple chunks and stir fry vegs till just staring to soften – 5 minutes. They need to have some crispness.

Made this tonight and it was a big hit with both myself and my husband. It was so easy to put together and very tasty. I can see myself making it again with maybe pork or shrimp. Hubby says he would like to have cashews added next time.

Sorry, but this is not a good sweet & sour recipe. I used a recipe I found online previously that was fantastic, but was unable to find it again the next time I wanted sweet & sour. Decided to give this one a try and what a waste. You basically end up with kinda sweet ketchup chicken. Even my chef husband couldn’t fix it to a point where I didn’t just taste ketchup. Definitely will NOT use this again.

Yummy recipe! I made rice to go with it – I would suggest cooking rice or whatever you plan to pair with the recipe beforehand. I would also chop all the ingredients ahead of time (if you have the time!) as this will save significant time. I also didn’t have enough lemon for the full recipe but it still tasted great

It was good. Tangy. I did add cornstarch to the flour mixture which was better than the last time I made it.

This was ultra easy to make and SOOOO good. I tripled the recipe planning to freeze some for future meals… but my teenager kids finished it off before I could! It’s already been requested again!

Easy to make and great tasting.

No changes to this dish… Prepared with ”fresh” pineapple…Recipe is very easy to follow, love the flavor of sweet & sour.. Husband is my ”guinnea pig”, says he LOVED IT… Serve over rice.. great meal for ”two’ with enough for lunch the next day!

Great recipe for a crowd and 3 generations . I doubled for 8 people. I did not add extra salt as ketchup has salt in it and also cut down a bit on brown sugar . Questioning my prowess in the kitchen however as prep time took me longer than mentioned even accounting for doubling recipe

My husband and I loved this so much. I did add some extras to my sweet and sour sauce and improvised by omitting sum things. I did use Chinese 5 spice. My go to all spice for Asian cooking.

This recipe is a good version of the dish. It’s sweet, but not too bad. If you don’t like sweet recipes, you might want to avoid this recipe. As for us, the family liked it a lot. I would definitely make it again.

I’m sorry I did not like the ketchup, it changed the flavor plus adding pepper, however, my husband liked it, I am not a fan of ketchup.
