My mother frequently prepared this cookie because it was one of her favorites. These cookies were usually available with tea when Mom had a large gathering of family and friends over.

Servings: 48
Yield: 3 to 4 dozen

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup butter, softened
  2. ½ cup shortening
  3. 1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
  4. 3 eggs
  5. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  6. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  7. ½ teaspoon baking soda
  8. ½ teaspoon salt
  9. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  10. ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  11. ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  12. 1 cup raisins
  13. ½ cup chopped walnuts
  14. 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cream together the shortening and the butter. Add the brown sugar and cream until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs until well blended.
  3. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves over the creamed mixture. Mix in then stir in the raisins, nuts and dates.
  4. Drop cookies onto ungreased baking sheets and bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden.

Excellent. Followed other reviewer’s suggestion and added 2T of flour to the batter as it did seem pretty moist. We’re very good.

Good. Probably really good with tea. The dough was quite sticky so I stuck it in the fridge for a while. They turned out a little cake-like after I added a little extra flour (2T).

Great cookies, they disappeared so quickly I will need to make some more.

These are great cookies. I substituted butter for shortening. I took them to a woman’s tea party and they were a hit. Thanks so much for the recipe.
