  5.0 – 2 reviews  • Apple Bar Recipes

Chocolate cake that has a dash of cinnamon is moist. This recipe yields either a two-layer, quarter-sheet cake or a sizable one-layer cake.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Additional Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 12 large bars

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. ½ cup white sugar
  3. ½ teaspoon baking powder
  4. ½ teaspoon salt
  5. 2 large egg yolks, beaten
  6. 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  7. 4 medium baking apples, peeled and sliced
  8. ¾ cup white sugar
  9. ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  10. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  11. ½ cup powdered sugar
  12. 1 tablespoon milk
  13. ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt for crust in a bowl. Cut butter into the mixture with 2 knives or a pastry blender until crumbly; do not overmix. Stir in egg yolks. Press 1/2 of the mixture into a 9×13-inch baking pan, and set the remainder aside for the topping.
  3. Prepare filling: Mix apple slices with sugar, flour, and cinnamon until coated. Layer apples overlapping evenly on top of the crust. Drizzle any remaining juices from the apple mixture over top for added sweetness. Crumble the remaining crust mixture over the apples.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until sides are bubbly and top is golden brown, about 40 minutes.
  5. While the bars are baking, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for icing together.
  6. Remove bars from the oven and immediately drizzle icing over top. Let cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes, before slicing into 12 bars and serving.

Made this recipe exactly as written and it turned out fabulous! Served it to some company and they said it was a “10” and asked for the recipe. Like another reviewer, I did also wonder what the egg yolk was for and might leave that out next time. Overall it’s a keeper recipe and maybe better than apple pie!

This was delicious! I made half the recipe but made the full recipe icing. I’m glad I did because the icing would not have been enough. I don’t really know what the egg yolk does to the crumb so next time I will leave it out. They really don’t hold up as bars and they are very thin. To remedy this, I will bake the whole recipe in an 9 x 9 dish. I noticed that the sides were browning but the top was not. I popped it into my air fryer oven for 3 minutes and it came out golden brown. Thank you for the recipe.
