I created these chewy, spicy, oatmeal raisin cookies after some experimentation. While they are baking, they fill your kitchen with a delicious aroma. The aroma of the spices makes me almost think of Christmas.

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup butter, softened
  2. ½ cup butter flavored shortening
  3. 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  4. ½ cup white sugar
  5. 2 eggs
  6. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  7. 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  8. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  9. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  10. ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  11. ½ teaspoon salt
  12. 3 cups rolled oats
  13. 1 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, butter flavored shortening, brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt; stir into the sugar mixture. Stir in the oats and raisins. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until light and golden. Do not overbake. Let them cool for 2 minutes before removing from cookie sheets to cool completely. Store in airtight container. Make sure you get some, because they don’t last long!

I have been baking these for years and all who taste them say “it’s the best oatmeal cookie they’ve ever eaten”! I don’t like clove,so I left that out.I add 1 cup of walnuts and for those who don’t like raisins,I use 1 cup of craisins.

These are without a doubt the BEST oatmeal cookies I have ever made. They came out absolutely perfect. Only change for us were 1/4 tsp cloves and 1/4 tsp nutmeg since cloves are so powerful. I also added 1/2 c chopped pecans since I wanted to add a bit on nuts to them. Oh my gosh. So good. Had four right off the bat. May cooking time for dark pans were 10 and on my shiny pan 12. I also used a 1 1/2 Tbls cookie scoop. Will DEFINITELY make these again. Thanks a bunch.

My husband’s favorites; I have to hide some for me. As suggested by others, I used all butter and added another half teaspoon of cinnamon, a half teaspoon of nutmeg, and a 1/4 teaspoon of ginger. I also used 2 cups of raisins. This recipe made about 45 cookies and, in my gas oven, took 12 minutes to bake, swapping trays at 6 minutes.

Easy to make. Swapped the cloves for nutmeg. Baked in a convection oven. I only bake one cookie sheet at a time because I was not sure on the time. Turned out wonderfully if baked 10 minutes.

Marvelous recipe! No ingredient changes made. A few tips to offer for cookie consistency from a cookie baker. When mixing sugars and butter, mix in stand mixer, or with hand mixer, for 2-3 minutes. Add eggs one at a time and mix for 1 minute after each egg then add vanilla and mix until combined. Add dry ingredients with a spoon (wooden works well) as well as the oatmeal and raisins, don’t use a mixer. I do this now for other cookie recipes as well and they come out of the oven beautifully.

I switch out raisins with dried cranberries, and add toasted almond slivers, chopped walnuts and pecans, and back off on the oatmeal by 1/2 cup to compensate for the density. People rave about them!

I added more raisins and used a larger scoop to make larger cookies and baked them for 14 minutes. I also added more vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves, however I usually add more of the flavorings to all of my recipes. I really liked the soft chewy texture along with the great taste. I will be making these again!

This is by far my favourite oatmeal cookie recipe! I’ve been making it for years now exactly as written and these cookies are always a hit. I now have a vegan in the house and I was able to easily adapt it with 2 easy changes: I replaced each egg with 1 tbsp of ground flax seeds plus 2 1/2 tbsp water (mix and leave to sit for 5 min) and used butter flavoured Crisco instead of butter. These are great cookies. I used Gluten Free flour to replace the regular flour, and then just followed the recipe. They are the best tasting cookies. I would make them again.
