Yield: 40 cookies

Ingredients

  1. 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  2. 6 tablespoons salted butter
  3. 1 tablespoon orange zest
  4. 2 large eggs
  5. 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring
  6. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  7. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  8. 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ (powdered) sugar
  9. 3 tablespoons milk, plus more if needed for thinning
  10. 2 teaspoons lemon zest
  11. 1 1/2 tablespoons nonpareil sprinkles

Instructions

  1. For the cookies: Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream together the granulated sugar, butter and orange zest until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing fully between each. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add to the mixer bowl and blend until just combined.
  3. Using floured hands, roll the dough into 1-inch balls and divide between the prepared baking sheets, setting the cookies 1 inch apart. Refrigerate for 1 hour to chill before baking so that the cookies retain their shape.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  5. Bake until the cookies are just barely turning brown, 10 to 12 minutes; don’t let them overbrown. Place on a wire rack until completely cooled, about 15 minutes.
  6. For the icing: Whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, milk and lemon zest in a bowl until smooth.
  7. Working in batches of 5, dip the tops of the cookies into the icing and return to the wire rack. Immediately top with the sprinkles. Allow the icing and sprinkles to set for about 20 minutes before serving or packaging.

Cute little cookie. Not too sweet or large. Got 40, cooked for 10 minutes. For the icing; 3/4 cup p.s. would have made plenty. Will be making these over and over.

Simple sweet cookie that kids will enjoy making and eating. I reduced the sugar and used orange zest for both the cookie dough and glaze since I didn’t have a lemon.
Mr. Peter Gilmore
I used the rainbow cylinder sprinkles in the batter instead of orange zest and no frosting and they were delicious, thank you Ree

Very good did not have orange so used lemon instead the glaze was bland so I added a little lemon juice. Overall they were pretty good not the best though.

These are the absolute best. Brought some to work and my coworkers ask me when I’m going to bring some again.

Definitely needs vanilla and when looking through the recipe I was surprised not to see it in there .

Made these this year as part of my Christmas cookie platter. These were so delicious!!! The citrus was so good, and the icing was perfect! They were like little iced shortbread bites. Super pretty on the cookie platter!
