The spicy-rich flavors of eggnog (including nutmeg, cream and rum) add a new holiday twist to a classic cookie shape, and the striped chocolate candies on top make them even more festive.

Yield: | 24 cookies |
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (see Cook’s Note)
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons rum extract
- 1 small pinch ground cloves
- 1 large egg yolk
- 4 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg
- 24 foil-wrapped striped milk chocolate-white chocolate drops, such as Hershey Hugs, unwrapped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl until combined. Beat the butter and 1/2 cup of the sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed in a large bowl until creamy, about 1 minute. Add the cream, rum extract, cloves, egg yolk and 2 teaspoons of the nutmeg and beat until smooth. Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until the dough just combines.
- Roll the dough into twenty-four 1-inch balls using a 1/2-ounce ice cream scoop or a tablespoon. Combine the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons nutmeg in a small bowl. Roll the balls in the spiced sugar to coat, and then arrange 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake the cookies, rotating the baking sheets front to back and top to bottom halfway through, until golden brown at the edges, about 14 minutes. Remove the baking sheets from the oven, place on wire racks and immediately press a chocolate drop in the center of each cookie while it is still soft and warm. Do not move the cookies until the chocolate has completely set and the cookies are cool, at least 1 hour.

I think it was missing something. They weren’t horrible but I also didn’t enjoy them- was thinking they’d be addicting like a snickerdoodle or classic chocolate chip cookie but they were not satisfying at all.
I have added this cookie to my Christmas cookie baking for a few years now and it has been a hit with friends and family. As I read through some of these reviews it sounds like they didn’t make the cookie according to the directions because every year they come out delicious!
very tasty, but 375 for 14 minutes is too long, at least for the size cookies i made (i got 22 out of the batch, so they were actually a little bigger than suggested). 10-12 minutes at 350 kept them soft and not overly browned
It’s a time-consuming cookie that gives underwhelming results. The flavor was ok. I think others had it right by using egg nog instead of the cream. I also didn’t like having to refrigerate the finished product in order to reset the Hershey’s Hugs. The amount of sugar and nutmeg that went in the trash when I was done (almost a cup) was extremely disappointing ☹️ Apparently someone in the Food Network Kitchens didn’t get the memo about starving people in the world. Not advocating for giving the starving sugar and nutmeg, but it really was a huge waste – especially given the amount of nutmeg the recipe calls for. Won’t make this again…
Worked out perfectly! I used eggnog instead of creme, and I only used one teaspoon nutmeg (also omitted the rum extract as I didn’t have any).
I made these exactly as written. The cookies spread far & wide while baking and looked nothing like the picture. I took the 2nd unbaked tray of cookies put them back in the mixer and added 1/4 cup of flour. Then chilled the dough for 30 minutes before reforming and baking. They turned out much better.
Why not use actual eggnog instead of heavy cream for an authentic flavor? I think that’s how I’ll try making these and post the results.
Great taste but came out rather dry.
These smell amazing while baking and taste great! Idk if they truly make me think of eggnog, but regardless, they taste fantastic. The creaminess of the Hershey Hug really rounds out the flavor and contrasts nicely to the crunchy exterior of the cookie. Mine flattened ever so slightly as I would think they should.
I will say that 4 tsps of nutmeg is crazy! It would’ve overwhelmed the entire flavor in my opinion. I added 1 tsp to the batter with 1/8 tsp of cloves and 1 tsp of cinnamon. For the sugar coating I added 1 tsp cinnamon & 1/2 tsp nutmeg. Perfect! As for the rum extract I added the 1 1/2 tsps. The flavor of 1 tsp didn’t come through to me. Also, made 16 cookies for me in each batch (I made 2 batches), not 24 as stated. Sorry for the long review. Just hoping it will help someone else.
The flavor of this cookie is just wonderful. I only put half the amount of nutmeg to the sugar mixture to roll the dough balls in and it’s perfect. I also only rolled half the ball in the mixture. I love eggnog and this was so so good.
