Ingredients
- 6 medium Yukon gold potatoes
- 2 to 3 cups heavy whipping cream
- 2 to 3 cups whole milk
- Kosher salt
- 2 lemons, zested
- Freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Put the potatoes in a large saucepan with the cream and milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then add 1 teaspoon of salt. Reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are very tender, about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove about 2 cups of the liquid and reserve. Add the lemon zest and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Use a potato masher to break up the potatoes while adding about 1 cup of the reserved liquid, to just ‘wet’ the potatoes. Add more, for desired creaminess. Spoon the potatoes into a serving bowl and serve immediately.

I said ‘no’ to lemon mash…
This is my GO-TO recipe for mashed potatoes in general. The lemon mashed are off the charts but my family also loves garlic mashed. I just got off the phone to help my son and gave him this recipe and instructions on using roasted garlic in lieu of the lemon. This is the BEST recipe out there for the BEST mashed potatoes ever! Thanks Tyler–I watched the original show years ago and have never gone back to the old way of making mashed potatoes.
Very creamy and good
SO good! I did find it to be too much liquid but again, it’s up to the individual’s choice of how they like it. Didn’t have Yukon Gold potatoes in any grocery stores, just plain potatoes. My Husband said they were good .
These potatoes are AMAZING! I don’t even like lemon and I thoroughly enjoyed these – now one of my favorite potato dishes.
I wanted to eat the whole pot!!! I will never make mashed potatoes any other way except like this. The absolute BEST! Thank you Tyler for this recipe.
OMG, I made these potatoes and WOW.. super delicious!
The recipe called for way too much liquid for not so many potatoes. So I have now written down my adjustments. The Yukon Gold Potatoes, I had never had until now. 5 stars!! I now will ONLY use these. They are great. I had to go to 4 different grocery stores to find them. But I’m glad I did.
I also needed to add my own seasoning at the end to add a little more flavor. But ultimately, this recipe was a big hit. My husband and my mother were so impressed they called my other family members over to taste the potatoes!!
The other thing was I didn’t use as much lemon zest as recipe called for, but I definitely will add more the next time because that did give a unique flavor.
Loved this recipe!!

You can cut the potatoes as it will make the process quicker. As for the amount of liquid, it depends on how you want the texture to be so there is no set amount that is why he said between 2-3 cups.
My son starts high school next week and has never had any interest in cooking. He saw Tyler making this recipe today and wanted to try it! I coached him, we altered the recipe slightly, and he and my boyfriend loved it (so did I !)
We added 1 tablespoon of lemon zest (vs. 2) and the lemon flavor came through nicely but didn’t overwhelm the dish. Yukons weren’t available so we used golds. We started the boiling with whole potatos, it was taking too long, halved them, still too long, then quaretered them. All in all, if you start by quartering them the cook time might be 25 minutes, but it took us 50 minutes to get them tender.
We love Tyler and his recipes and now I can say even though I’m a foodie and try to instill my love for cooking in my kids, it was Tyler who finally got my son interested!
If someone would let me know the exact amount of liquid that was used ( milk and cream), I would appreciate it as I only saw the 2nd half of the show. The reecipe says 2-3 cups and I’m wondering if Tyler said the amount he used on the show. Thank you. I’m rating this 5 stars in advance based on so many good reviews..
