Ingredients

  1. 1 cup coarsely ground Italian roast, French roast or espresso coffee (2 to 2 1/2 ounces)
  2. 1 tablespoon ground cardamom
  3. 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  4. 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  5. 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  6. 1/2 teaspoon finely grated fresh peeled ginger
  7. 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  8. 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  9. Large pinch kosher salt
  10. 4 cups hot (not boiling) water
  11. 1 1/2 cups nonfat milk
  12. 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  13. 1 tablespoon sugar
  14. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. For the chai: In a 48-ounce French press coffee maker, combine the coffee, cardamom, cinnamon, ground ginger, allspice, grated ginger, pepper, cloves, salt and water. Place the lid on the coffee press with the plunger extended. Let the mixture brew for 4 minutes. Press down the plunger.
  2. While the coffee mixture is brewing, whisk the nonfat milk in a heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat until very thick and foamy, 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. For the cinnamon sugar: In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon until combined. Set aside.
  4. Pour the coffee mixture into a medium saucepan and rewarm over medium heat. Stir in the condensed milk. Divide the chai among 4 cups and spoon large dollops of the whisked nonfat milk on top. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar and serve.

We loved the flavor of the spices in this!! I can see how it would be good with coffee, if you’d like coffee, but I don’t, so I made a true chai latte, with black tea. I used all the same spices, but instead of the ground coffee, I used organic black tea leaves. I also used coconut milk, and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream in my steamer, and skipped the sweetened condensed milk. I sweetened with honey and stevia, and finished it with thick frothed coconut milk, sprinkled with the cinnamon sugar. Yummy!!

Great recipe! I made a larger batch for our Thanksgiving. For a kick you can add some Jamison.

Amazing. Only costs about $10 worth of spices, but about $2.50 / cup. Less than a coffee shop and makes my house smell great!

Very pleasing! I made the spice blend and sprinkled over my ground coffee in the percolator! If “raggbaggs” had watched this episode, you would know that Giada did say Chai is a tea however she was doing HER version of a Chai with coffee!!! Nice change to what I usually drink and great way to get in some beneficial spices!!!

Chai is the Indian word for tea.

Sounds like an OK recipe, but “chai” = tea not coffee so maybe this should be renamed as spiced latte.

Hits the spot! It reminds me of a “dirty chai” – not too sweet but definitely has that chai flavor. I used the coffee maker method to make a big pot and substituted low fat sweetened condensed milk to cut a few calories (couldn’t tell the difference at all!.
