Chocolate Cobbler

  4.1 – 22 reviews  • Valentine’s Day
Cobblers date back to the 1850s in America in various forms, but were originally made with fruit. Ree likes to make this version for her chocoholic husband Ladd as a special treat.
Level: Easy
Total: 1 hr 5 min
Active: 10 min
Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter
  2. 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  3. 1 1/3 cups sugar
  4. 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  5. 1 cup buttermilk
  6. 1 tablespoon vanilla
  7. 1 cup semisweet chocolate chunks
  8. 1 cup sugar
  9. 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  10. 2 cups boiling water
  11. Cookies and cream ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. For the base: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Add the butter to a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and place in the oven while it preheats and melts.
  2. Mix the flour, sugar and cocoa powder in a bowl. Mix in the buttermilk and vanilla until a batter forms. Spoon the batter around the baking dish over the melted butter.
  3. For the topping: Top with the chocolate chunks, sugar and cocoa powder. Pour over the boiling water and, without stirring, bake until a nice crust forms, 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm with cookies and cream ice cream.

It’s Hot Fudge Pudding Cake with chocolate chunks added. Not sure why she needs all that butter, though.

This was delicious both times I made it!! After reading the reviews, I’m wondering why it worked for some. This was so GOOD I’m not making a fancy Christmas dessert, I’m making this!!!

This was so bizzar I had to try it . I halved the recipe so if it didn’t turn out I wouldn’t have wasted all those ingredients. I took 45 minutes to bake and it was kinda good. Seemed a bit lumpy but when you added the ice cream you really didn’t care. It was ok but not a “keeper”.

First, I did not make this recipe. I do make a version of this I have had for years. It is called “Upside Down Fudge Cake.” Concept is the same. 1 c. flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 3/4 c. sugar.1/2 c. milk, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 c. chopped nuts (optional), 2 T butter. Mix well. Pour into greased baking dish. Combine 1/2 c. sugar,1/2 c. brown sugar. 1/2 c. cocoa. Sprinkle over top. Pour 1 c. boiling water over whole thing. Bake 350 for 45 mins.

So. Freaking. Awesome!
Wow, is this good. Full disclosure, I couldn’t bring myself to put entire cup of sugar on top, so I only put a half cup and half the cocoa powder. Worked out fine. It still had a crunchy and crispy top. Since my oven was already full, I put the dessert in the toaster oven with a metal pan. No problems. I’ll be making this again! I might try it with just one stick of butter though.

Saw this on the show on 2/12 & decided to give it a go as it’s such an interesting recipe. It turned out AH-MAZING. Lightly crisp top, almost like a brownie and an ooey-gooey, nod to molten lava cake, center that knocked this dessert out of the park. We HAD to have vanilla ice cream to temper the richness. It makes a huge portion, if anything I would half the recipe as it’s so sinfully delicious.

Did not turn out at all unfortunately.

His recipe was followed exactly and was an EPIC FAIL! Too runny and way too much butter!
