Ingredients
- Two 10-ounce cans clams
- Two 8-ounce bottles clam juice
- 3 thick slices bacon, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, diced
- 2 ribs celery, diced
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 medium red potatoes, scrubbed and diced
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
- Dash of hot sauce
- Dash of Worcestershire sauce
- Snipped fresh chives, for serving
- Heat a large Dutch oven over medium heat.
Instructions
- Drain the canned clams over a measuring cup and reserve the juice. You will need 3 cups reserved juice in total, so add the 2 bottles of clam juice to make a total of 3 cups.
- Add the bacon to the Dutch oven and saute long enough for the bacon to begin to render its fat but not begin to brown, about 3 minutes. Turn up the heat and add the garlic, celery, onions, thyme, bay leaf and some salt and pepper. Saute until tender and fragrant, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the flour and cook until pasty and blonde. Stir in the clam juice, and then add the potatoes. Bring to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are just tender, about 8 minutes.
- Add the half-and-half and clams and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Season with the vinegar, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper. Serve with the snipped chives.

Amazing! Love this recipe!
I have made this the last 2 years for Christmas Eve and my family loved it. It’s just the right consistency, not too thick or overly rich. I usually make a batch and a half.
Delicious.
Best clam chowder ever!!! Only thing I change is adding a lot more clams. I’ve made this recipe many times for friends and family. Nothing better, just add crunchy french bread and a good beer or glass of wine, YUM
Delicious we loved it. Easy to make.I will make it again and again.
it was delicious!!!!!!! I followed the recipe exactly as it was written and it was flawless! thanks Neelys!!
Awesome! Everyone loves it. I add extra hot sauce for a kick and also put in chopped carrots with the other veggies. I use peeled yukon gold potatoes bc I love them and prefer not to have the skins in a soup. Also sometimes I add frozen peas just before serving for extra sweetness and nutrition. Really yummy recipe.
This recipe was the highlight of our X-mas eve dinner 2012. I can’t think of anything that has already been said to describe this chowder. Just make it!!
Clam CHowder is a Christmas tradition with our neighbors families. Tried this out on our family first – best clam chowder ever and so much easier than my Mom’s recipe. Our friends are going to love this!
Best clam chowder we’ve ever had. Love it and super easy!
