Tom H… there is nothing wrong with taking a short cut for coleslaw ! If you have the time for shredding cabbage and carrots and then making your own dressing you are not working all day. These chefs provide easier ways to put a great meal on the table with less prep time. Boo to you on criticism.,,, and this is a delicious upscale chili hot dog!
You are a chef and put store bought coleslaw on a WV hotdog?!?!?! Really?
That’s not anything near what I grew up in West Virginia eating for hot dogs.
I loved the ease of just put the stuff in a pot and simmer. I made this exactly as directed and it was too tomato-pastey for me. I would probably cut it in half and use a bit more garlic. Very easy and my husband loved the tomato sweetness of the sauce.
Okay, this recipe was delicious. Def. make sure to grill the dogs. Classic creamy slaw is delicious. Recipe calls for 1 cup of chili, but be prepared to have a lot more if you follow the chili recipe given. Alooootttt more. Very tasty though.
The chili was perfect!! Followed your recipe exactly, except had to cut down simmering time or dinner would have been too late. One question: if you are going to spend about 3 hours making the perfect chili, why top it off with store bought slaw?? I made my own with finely cut cabbage, WV style.
I grew up with “toasted buns. It was mustard, onion, chili and slaw. OMG
This is our favorite way to have a hot dog. The chili recipe is so delicious. My whole family goes crazy for it!
Ok let’s be clear – the chili is the star of this recipe. So easy – just throw in a Dutch oven and let it do it’s magic. It’s delicious and would be fantastic chili on its own. Coleslaw was nice crunch so nice to make a different spin on an old favorite.
I made this coney sauce and it by far the best recipe I have found. However, Gene’s root beer stand, my my home town in Indiana adds Horseradish to the slaw. It takes this recipe over the top! I will only be using your coney recipe from here forward!
