Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 carrots, cut into 1/2-inch thick rounds
- 2 stalks celery, cut into 1/4-inch half-moons
- 1 onion, chopped
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup whole milk
- 4 cups shredded cooked chicken
- 3 cups frozen potato tots, such as Tater Tots, thawed
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
- Melt the butter in a large heavy pot over medium-high heat until hot. Add the carrots, celery and onions and season with 1 teaspoon salt and 3/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are golden, about 12 minutes. Stir in the flour, and then whisk in the broth and milk and bring to a boil, whisking. Boil until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the chicken. Transfer to a 2-quart baking dish.
- Pulse the tots in a food processor with the thyme until medium ground. Scatter over the top of the casserole and bake until the filling is bubbling and the topping is golden and crisp, 20 to 25 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Reviews
Read the reviews before I made this recipe. I did add garlic power and seasoning salt…otherwise followed the recipe 100%…and it was really good! An easy, tasty recipe to add into my rotation. All of the family enjoyed!
I’m grateful to the reviewers that noted the dish was bland. I added garlic powder, seasoning salt, extra black pepper and a bit of chipotle red pepper for smokiness. I also put a bit of salt on top of the tots, since potatoes tend to be bland without it. We loved it! I’ll make this again.
This was…. Not great. I added mushrooms, Dijon and a dash of cayenne to sauce. Everything tasted good but the tots were over taken by the sauce and sunk down. Soggy mess, waste of resources. The video is nothing like the written recipe. Cut back on liquid. Way back.
Made this and the family was not impressed, they ate it but asked that it not be repeated. Not a lot of flavor.
Easy recipe and I was happy to be able to use up leftover frozen tots. It needed something extra in my opinion – maybe more salt? I dont envision the leftovers reheating crispy tots, but we will see!
The family loved it
Amazing and so easy to make! I added additional carrot and celery. Could also add mixed vegetables as well!
Added ranch dressing mix and bacon (pancetta). Cheese with tots. Big hit. Nice (and easy) addition to rotation.
Easy and creamy recipe.
Ok, so I hate when people modify a recipe in reviews, but here I go. #1 I had some leftover roasted butternut squash and added it. Omg! #2 I made it all in a Dutch oven and instead of transferring to a casserole, just put the tots on top of the mixture in the Dutch oven (less dishes). Amazing and my picky kids loved it.
