Death By Chocolate Trifle

  4.8 – 219 reviews  • Chocolate Cake

This chocolate dessert that ends in death is a real favorite. I have to make this for church suppers every time!

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Additional Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 15 mins
Servings: 16
Yield: 1 punch bowl

Ingredients

  1. 1 (18.4 ounce) package brownie mix (such as Betty Crocker®)
  2. 2 large eggs
  3. ½ cup vegetable oil
  4. 3 tablespoons water
  5. 4 cups milk
  6. 2 (3.9 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix
  7. 3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered English toffee
  8. 1 (16 ounce) package frozen whipped topping, thawed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Make the brownies: Combine brownie mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water in a large bowl. Mix with a wooden spoon until well blended. Spread into the prepared baking pan.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted 2 inches from the side of the pan comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Let cool completely.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the pudding: Whisk milk and pudding mix together in a large bowl until smooth; set aside.
  5. To assemble: Crumble 1/2 of the brownies on the bottom of a glass punch bowl; spoon 1/2 of the pudding on top. Crush 1 toffee bar over pudding and top with 1/2 of the whipped topping. Repeat layers in the same order, then refrigerate until ready to serve, saving the last toffee bar to crumble and sprinkle on top before serving.

I’m giving it 5 stars because I used a devils food cake with chocolate chips in it instead of brownies plus everything else

Delicious! Made for my Bible study group and it was a big hit! Just made it for our camping trip this weekend, requested by my hubby!

I am diabetic, but rest of family is not. I used 2 different brownie mixes. One was dark chocolate, the other caramel swirls. I also used sugar-free chocolate pudding. Layers were: dark brownie, pudding, fresh blueberries, whipped topping, shavings from a chocolate bar. 2nd set I used the caramel brownie instead, and 3rd set I went back to the dark brown brownie. It turned out beautifully, nobody could tell that I used sugar-free pudding (to lessen the sugar high after effects), and was delicious! The blueberries neutralized the sweetness of everything else, which in our case, was a good thing. It made the dessert ‘feel’ more healthy. LOL!

I have been making this for years, minus the toffee bars. Once I discovered chocolate mousse mixes, I started making it with that. Family begs me to bring this every holiday. Looks beautiful in a clear glass trifle bowl. If you make it too far in advance, I discovered the brownies literally dissolve into the mousse or pudding, so I make it the day of the holiday. I have a sister-in-law that loves it best once the brownies have dissolved, so she takes a big helping home with her.

I made this recipe exactly as stated. I have made this before but hadn’t made it in so long that I needed this recipe. As usual it turned out excellent! Dianne Joyner mentioned in her review that she sprinkled Kahlúa onto her brownies I think I’m going to try that next time! This is a very easy recipe and very economical, I added everything up and it came to just about $12. Actually it would be a little less because Walmart only had the large Cool Whip when you only need one. Excellent recipe everybody will love it!

Easy to make. Substituted Oreos for Toffee bars, and just used as a topping before serving so they wouldn’t get soggy.

I made this just like the recipe except did one more step. After the brownies were baked and cooled, I sprinkled them all over with Kalua and let it soak in for about 30 minutes before cutting the brownies into small squares to finish the recipe. Absolutely delicious. Think I could eat the whole bowl!

I made it with a little less pudding and added strawberries between each layer and drizzled warm carmel on the brownies inbetewn each layer completely amazing

It was delicious I made it for me and my neighbors and we all agreed it was a big hit

it was good, but not as chocolatey as the name implies. More creamy than chocolatey. i would call it “minor discomfort by chocolate”. Unfortunately, I didn’t read other reviews ahead of time. next time, I will: 1. double brownies 2. replace 1/2 the pudding with fudge topping. 3. 1/2 the cool whip Thanks, though. it’s a good start!

I have been making this for years

Best dessert ever! My family loves this! I’ve been making it for year!

Super yummy. I scaled back the pudding and brownies because there were only 4 people eating this- so one box of pudding with 1 1/2 C milk to make it a bit thicker and a small pan of brownies.. I used heath bar chips vs the candy bars and added torani chocolate syrup on top. Everyone loved it and it was enough for Thanksgiving dinner dessert and finished the next day.

This was fabulous. Easy, fast (except for waiting for the brownies to cool) and asthetically pleasing, not to mention DEE-licious. It was great the first day. And the second day.

I have made this for years, but I have always used chocolate mousse instead of pudding. I also make up variations (i.e. – pound cake, lemon or cream cheese pudding, & berrries, etc.)

Delicious ! Makes a lot.

I will definitely make this again. My friend’s mom made this when I was a kid, and I always got seconds!

I made this for Easter dinner and everyone loved it. It made quite a bit and I was able to take the “leftovers” to bible study on Wednesday and those folks loved it as well.
