Apple Spice Dump Cake

In an effort to serve something other than the standard dump cake for Memorial Day, this cake was made on a whim. It came out excellent, especially when paired with some vanilla ice cream.

Geez people, how can a spice cake be too spicy? It is called spice cake for a reason. I made this with 1 can of pie filling and 2 honeycrisp apples which I sauteed with1/2 cup water, 1 cup of golden raisins, 1 T of lemon juice and 1/4 cup of brown sugar. I then stirred in the pie filling. Placed this on the bottom of the baking dish, cake mix (of your choice) and 1 cup of melted butter. Then shake the dish so the cake mix is fully covered. I then sprinkled raw sugar and almonds over the top and baked. It isn’t really a CAKE if you will but more of a cobbler or crisp type dessert. Thank you Marcia L Cainion for your recipe.

I made this for an extended family Thanksgiving gathering. This was my first dump cake ever so I got a bit nervous about the butter soaking into the cake mix, so I stirred it into the cake mix some before baking. I didn’t have any allspice, nutmeg or nuts so I just put a generous amount of cinnamon into the apple filling. I baked it in a deep 10 inch Cast Iron skillet and it turned out great, as well as stayed warm for 3 hours. About 1/2 of it was ate, which is more than I can say for most of the desserts. I will be making this again for other gathering.

I loved this recipe, so simple! It did have some dry mix left on the top so I think I would melt the butter ahead next time. I drizzled melted butter in the dry areas and continued to bake it for an additional 5 minutes. The crust was awesome. We served this with vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. Hello Fall!

I had company for dinner today and I made this for dessert. Everyone loved it! I did make some changes after reading others reviews. I used 1 can of apple pie filling and 4 honey crisp apples. I heated 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup bourbon 2TBLS of cornstarch, 1/2 cup sugar and a little lemon juice and then mixed that with the apples. I sprinkled the cake mix over top and then cut up a stick and a half of butter and put the pats of butter on top. It made a really good crispy top layer that was delicious. Even though I cut down on the sweetness level with using the 4 cut up apples and using 1 can of apple pie filling instead of 2, it was still too sweet. I wish I had gone with less sugar, maybe 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup? But having vanilla ice cream with it toned down the sweetness of it and made it really delicious!

very disappointing the only part of the cake mix that did right was the part with butter the rest stayed powder. can eat just not very appetizing,

I’ve made this cake with both Spice Cake Mix and Yellow Cake Mix. If I use Spice Cake Mix, I don’t add additional sugar or spices. If I use Yellow Cake Mix, I might use additional spices but no additional sugar. It is a great cake without the additions.

My husband and I just made this cake and we are a bit confused! The cake mix didn’t disappear so there are globs of dry cake mix in the areas between where the butter melted. We tried it anyway and it does taste okay but it’s a bit spicy. I had no idea we could substitute yellow cake mix, which we’ll try next time, and we’ll also cut down on the all spice and nutmeg.

Made this for my cousin. She loved it! I used 1 can of apple pie filling and 2 cans of Glory Cooked Apples. I combined the apples and pie filling in a pot with a little butter, cinnamon and brown sugar. Also, I cut the nutmeg and allspice in half.

I am sure all the reviews are honest and true as to this dump cake recipe. I just don’t like it and won’t make it again. I used canned apples and thoroughly drained the juice. Even after doing that this cake turned out to be a gooey mess, and I gave it another chance and ended up with the same results. I’m giving it two stars for ease and preparation only.

Way too sweet. Adding the recommended amount of sugar to the pie filling was overkill. Further, even though I was pretty thorough spacing the butter, there were dry spots in the topping. In others words just dry cake mix.

This takes the ever so regular dump cakes and knocks it out of the park! It’s fabulous and oh so easy to throw together. The entire family ate it up and begged of me to make it again soon!

I have made lots of dump cakes and this was the best with its generous use of spices to make it feel like Autumn. I did not think it had too many spices but it certainly would be best with ice cream. You could probably just use yellow cake mix instead of spice cake mix if you wanted less spice in it. I doubled the nuts and melted the butter first, to make sure the top was evenly covered, avoiding dry spots. Overall, this was easy and just perfect. I got much praise for it. This has become a family fixture.

Not the prettiest cake I’ve ever made but everyone at coffee hour loved it! Especially topped with whipped cream. Ended up using maybe half the spice mixture, though.

I made the recipe as written but I used “no sugar” apple pie filling. My husband loved it but for me it had too much allspice. Next time, I will decrease the amount of the spices. I loved how easy it was to make! Yummy topped with sugar free ice cream!
