Ingredients
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
- 2 teaspoons smoked sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 2 large Vidalia onions, cut into 1-inch thick slices
Instructions
- In a heavy bottomed pot, add enough oil to reach 4 inches up the sides. Preheat to 365 degrees F.
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, paprika, onion powder, salt, and baking powder. In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, whisking the batter until just combined. In a medium bowl or wide baking dish, add onion rings and dust with flour. Toss gently to uniformly coat rings, and shake off excess flour. Working in batches, dip floured onion rings into the batter, making sure they are thoroughly coated, then carefully add to the preheated oil. Cook until deep golden, flipping halfway through if necessary, about 2 minutes. Remove the onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate and season immediately with salt. Transfer to a serving platter and serve hot. No ketchup needed!

Came out great! My family compared them to the onion rings at the Varsity here in Atlanta.
really good (; best ever
I will most definitely make again. Keep up the good work sunny.
I made these one night along with the Sunny Side Up Burger because my husband loves Onion Rings and homemade burgers. Both the onion rings AND the burger were amazing!! I will definitely make these again! :
These were very tasty and easy to make considering you mix everything in one bowl. I just wished there was a little more crunch, I think the next time I will use 3/4 flour and 1/3 corn meal.
Family LOVES these onion rings. You don’t need ketchup.
I won’t have a problem with this recipe I’ve used hers before and everything taste good. Before my onion rings never puffed up. I have a issue though. I have noticed lately with whomever is writing the recipes for the chefs do not adhere to the instructions seen on line. In fact if you haven’t seen it or watch the online video you will be totally confused. I reviewed the written instructions on this one and then watched the video because the instructions didn’t make sense at the end. Because I had seen the show before and I am not a novice cook I was able to spot this. Please be careful of your written instructions ok
Very good and a big hit with the family. Easy to make and great with ranch dressing as dipping sause (per the kids).
Made these yesterday with grilled steaks and they were excellent. delicious and easy, although they took a little longer than 2 minutes, I guess the oil wasnt hot enough. Definitely will make these again, good job Sunny!
I made these onion rings for my family and my husband asked if I had bought them from Portillo’s. They were a huge hit and I will be making them again tonight with homemade sloppy joe. Excellent!!
