Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, grated
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- One 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes
- 1 pound ground beef
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- One pound store bought pizza dough, room temperature
- 8 ounces scamorza cheese, sliced
- 4 ounces thin pepperoni (about 32 slices)
- 1/4 cup olive oil, for brushing
Instructions
- For the sauce: To a small saucepan over low heat add the oil and garlic and cook until fragrant. Add the tomato paste and seasoning, and mash with the back of a wooden spoon. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat.
- For the burger: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Preheat oven to 550 degrees F with pizza stone on the middle rack of the oven.
- Form the meat into four 4-ounce patties and sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. Grill until medium, then remove from the heat and place on a paper-towel-lined plate.
- Divide the pizza dough into four 4-ounce balls. Press out each ball on a floured pizza peel to about a 5-inch round. Top each with a slice of scamorza, a couple slices of pepperoni, then 1 burger patty and 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce. Fold the dough over the burger as if making a large dumpling. Brush with olive oil. Bake on the pizza stone in the oven until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve with extra tomato sauce on the side to dip.

Ingredients list says 32 slices pepperoni. Recipe uses 8 slices ?
Made this for dinner tonight and the family loved these. It is a little messy to put together but so worth the effort. Don’t worry, stick them in the oven and they bake up into perfection. Have a little warm pizza sauce on the side for dipping if you like extra.
Loved this receipe, easy and quick! Sauce is very easy to make and very tasty!! I now make the sauce for other receipes.
We have had these in West Virginia for about 40 years, where have you all been?
I dont have a pizza oven, will a regular oven work?
I used pepperoni and canadian bacon and fresh mozzerella. These are a new family favorite.
My kids LOVED these! I think they may be a new family favorite. I am going to experiment with adding other pizza toppings to them next time, but 2 thumbs up Jeff!
Excellent!!! The pizza dough elevates the taste of a hamburger. The pizza dough does not get soggy like traditional breads. Don’t forget the dipping sauce. I bought pizza sauce in the market. It is really tasty – must try at least once. The flavors just melt together and it’s easy to make.
I saw this on TV the other day and it looked pretty good. I thought about it for about two days and decided I wanted to try it. I looked this recipe up on this website and gave it a try. I did not make my own pizza sauce though – I bought pizza sauce in a jar from the market. The family LOVED this recipe! Don’t forget to have some pizza sauce on the side to dip.
This recipe is fantastic! Super easy and the filling possibilities are endless.
