This quick bread only takes a few minutes to mix up and bake. With honey or jam on top, it tastes fantastic. This is a recipe we enjoy, especially around Easter.

Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ¼ teaspoons salt
- 4 teaspoons vegetable oil
- ⅞ cup boiling water
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted (Optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet. Whisk the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl.
- Mix vegetable oil, boiling water, honey, and molasses into the flour mixture, and stir until thoroughly combined. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured work surface, and knead a few times to be sure the dough is completely mixed. Divide the dough into quarters, and roll each quarter into a ball. Press each dough ball into a circle about 1/4-inch thick, and place on prepared baking sheet. If desired, use a kitchen knife to lightly score the breads with 2 criss-cross lines to break the breads apart later.
- Bake in the preheated oven until browned, about 15 minutes. If desired, brush the breads with melted butter after removing from oven.
- Store in a plastic zipper bag. This bread freezes very well.

This turned out so good. I adjusted the recipe to 10 servings. I decided to use this recipe for rolls, so I used a food scale to weigh out evenly sized rolls, baked for 15 minutes and they were great! I’ll definitely make this again.
This was sooo delicious!
This was great! I will say that it needed a little something flavor wise at the end so I served it with honey butter like you might find with this kind of dark bread at a restaurant.
I actually enjoyed these quite a bit more than I expected too. I made a half batch, otherwise followed the recipe as stated. I found the dough to be a bit dry, so I anticipated the flatbread to come out dry as well–but that was not the case. They are perfect texture-wise, and great flavor too. I do find them a touch on the sweet side, so in the future, I may omit the honey entirely, and use just the molasses. My hubby liked them with a touch of butter and fig jam on top–while I look forward to having them as a side to some soup later on! Thank you so much for the recipe!
This is an easy way to have a hot bread, in the morning, especially if you are shy about making biscuits. The whole wheat gives this a slightly chewy texture that is a bit more dense than a biscuit, but it holds up jam and butter, just fine! I was not familiar with this, and I’m sure that you can make yours more attractive than mine, with just a bit more attention than I paid, before I put them in the oven. On it’s own, the molasses flavor is noticeable, but it is really quite pleasing with a fruit-type spread. Fast and easy to put together, with common pantry ingredients. And if you don’t have quite enough molasses, like me, you can make up the difference with a bit more honey. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Delicious bread that only takes a few minutes to make. It was perfect with the roast beef dinner I was making. I really enjoyed the flavors and texture. I did shape my dough about an inch thick instead of 1/4 inch thick and cut it into chunks. I will certainly be making this bread often. Thank you BOLTONLANE for sharing this wonderful recipe.
Wonderful! Sweet, easy, and perfect warm or not, without even any butter or honey.
I wanted to make a whole wheat flat bread for mana’ish and though this is a sweeter bread, it worked perfectly! I also ate some dipped in honey and honestly, this is a wonderful bread just to eat because you want something to snack on. I highly recommend it–perfect blend of taste and small time investment.
This is such a treat to make and to eat!! As I was mixing the bread, it smelt so wonderful and I looked forward to baking it. When 15 mins was up and I opened the oven door, the fantastic aroma once again mesmerized me. Finally, the taste… Heavenly! How could something so simple to put together taste so great?!! Thank you for a wonderful recipe! I will definitely be making this again soon!! FYI: I needed to use a little more than a cup of water for the mixture to form a dough. I forgot to mention that they even look so pretty! This recipe is simply fantastic!! Ahhhh!!!!
This was my first attempt at a flat bread and since hubby was reading the recipe to me, (we) added the butter into the liquid:) I scaled it for 4 servings since I wasn’t sure of how it would turn out and wished I’d made more however since it was so easy it can be made from scratch any time we want more! Absolutely loved the results, shared recipe with my daughter and will be making another batch to go with the roasted chicken, a bit of tarragon and mayo. Can’t think of another recipe as east as this one… Thanks for sharing!
Followed recipe and while mixing it turn out really dry with only 7/8 of a cup of water. Ended up turning it into a bread. Added two eggs and enough water to moisten into a bread batter. Greased and floured a bread pan and baked at 350 for 60 minutes. Final thoughts: Might consider using half of the baking powder (1/2 teaspoon) and adding a (1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Will probably use milk in place of water (1 cup or more). This will probably bring more moisture to the bread. Never made flat bread before. maybe I didn’t make it right.
We loved this recipe. The children said it had more flavor when it was cold.
A quick flat bread that can be served for breakfast or any other meal. It is great served with applebutter, honey or jam. It is so good when it is right out of the oven
This is one of my favorite breads that my mom used to make. It’s best dipped in honey!
The bread was easy to make and came out nice with just a hint of sweetness. It was great hot out of the oven with melted butter and honey drizzled on it.
I almost didn’t make this because it called for 7/8 cup of water. Silly me 8) I just made it a scant cup of boiling water. This recipe is a keeper! Everybody enjoyed it this Easter morning.
