Monte Cristo Sandwich – the Real One

  4.5 – 252 reviews  • Breakfast Sandwich Recipes

The authentic Monte Cristo sandwich is this one. It is quite tasty and has a good thick batter. Sandwiches can be eaten warm with currant jelly or currant sauce can be made using currant jelly, heavy cream, and water.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 15 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 16 mini sandwiches

Ingredients

  1. 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
  2. ⅔ cup water
  3. 1 egg
  4. ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
  5. 1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder
  6. ½ teaspoon salt
  7. 8 slices white bread
  8. 4 slices Swiss cheese
  9. 4 slices turkey
  10. 4 slices ham
  11. ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  12. 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Heat 5 inches of oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (180 degrees C). While oil is heating, make the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper; whisk into the egg mixture until smooth. Set aside in the refrigerator.
  2. Assemble sandwiches by placing one slice of turkey on one slice of bread, a slice of ham on another, then sandwich them with the Swiss cheese in the middle. Cut sandwiches into quarters, and secure with toothpicks.
  3. Dip each sandwich quarter in the batter so that all sides are coated. Deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown on all sides. Remove toothpicks and arrange on a serving tray. Dust with confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

Instead of using 2/3 cup of flour..I mixed 1/3 cup of corn starch n other was flour…flour absorbs the oil..so Instead of a heavy batter..its more crispy without the added oil & the same with the water 1/3 cup water n other heavy whipping cream.. Very filling sandwiches

I’m giving this recipe 5 stars even though not my favorite because I followed Evagaline’s recommend of grilling vs frying per the recipe. I have never had – nor seen anyone eat – a Monte Cristo. So I had no context. The closest I’ve gotten was considering ordering from a menu so I had no idea what to expect. The second I started to fry on the griddle like a grilled cheese I realized two things; 1) it’s dipped in batter! Unless you are going to turn the sandwich halves (I halved vs quartered) on all sides to make sure the batter is properly cooked – which I did! – risks having some uncooked parts. Duh! But hindsight is 20/20. 2) While likely very decadent, the crust from frying I bet makes this fluffy gooey goodness that a grilled version gets close to but not the same. We DID like this. I made two sandwiches via grilled cheese style, turning like Circ de Solei acrobats on my griddle. Tasty! The second sandwich, before dipping in batter, added 1/4tsp of cayenne and then served with homemade strawberry jelly. I prefer more savory than sweet but this was fun, unique and a lesson learned! I might try again – frying as written!! Thanks SEAWAKIM!!

I haven’t had these in a long time, and the last time I made them was not a recipe like this. I made these and although I’m not a huge fan of anything deep fried my husband and I loved them!! Makes more than we’ll eat, but we cook and bake for the homeless in our community and I’m sure they’ll love the leftovers

No changes needed. Make exactly the following instructions, turns out great

Made pan fried with butter, like French toast. Very good, don’t leave out the powdered sugar and strawberry jelly.
William Burke
Made it with milk instead of water and used leftover Hamburger buns. Everyone loved it!

This was amazing. Will make again.

This was a great recipe and easy to make. The kids loved it and went back for seconds. It isn’t one I’ll make very often, but it is a nice treat on occasion. I would recommend doubling the batter if you’re using Texas toast, or a thicker bread, like I did. I ran out before finishing and had to make a second batch.

My only complaint about this recipe is that the batter wasn’t enough to supply a service of four, two bread slices times four = 8. The group I made this for numbered three and I had enough barely batter to cover all three sandwiches divided into fourths. Otherwise, A+. Excellent.

No changes this time and yes I will change a little bit to make it my own

This was good. I only gave 4 stars because the batter was too thin. I thought it should be thick like corn dog batter so you can’t see the sandwich through the batter.

Delicious! Just like the restaurants. I like to serve mine with blackberry or raspberry jam on the side. Next time I make it, I’ll blend the batter with spinach; you can’t taste it and it adds nutrients.

Used whole wheat flour for the wet dip, mayo, Honey mustard, ham & mozzarella,,,,dipped in raspberry jalapeno sauce. Excellent!

Personally, it didn’t taste better than a regular sandwich. Plus, the powdered sugar on meat was a strange taste that I’d prefer not to try again.

Tastes just like restaurant sandwiches! Was easy to make in 15 minutes or less. Kids love it too.
Elizabeth Crawford
It was good but not like having someone else make and serve it.

THANK GOODNESS SOMEBODY FINALLY KNOWS WHAT THE REAL MONTE CRISTO IS!!! IT IS NOT FRENCH TOAST MADE INTO A SANDWICH! IT IS DEEP FRIED FOR ALL THE DELICIOUSNESS. IF YOU DON’T WANT IT DEEP FRIED THAN MAKE THE MONTE CRISTO WANNA BE!!!
