Grandad’s Pancakes

  4.7 – 752 reviews

My grandfather passed down this well-kept family recipe for granddad’s handmade pancakes. He made these breakfast delights to feed his family of seven, which included four growing boys. He wouldn’t share the recipe with anyone until just before he died, when he gave it to my mother (his daughter-in-law). It has long been a household favorite!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 20 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  2. ¼ cup white sugar
  3. 1 tablespoon baking powder
  4. ¼ teaspoon salt
  5. 1 cup milk, at room temperature
  6. 1 egg, at room temperature
  7. 1 tablespoon oil
  8. 2 teaspoons oil, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; make a ‘well’ in the center of the flour mixture. Pour milk, egg, and 1 tablespoon oil into the well. Mix until well moistened.
  2. Place a griddle over medium-high heat; sprinkle a few drops of water onto the griddle. If the droplets bounce, the griddle is ready; add 2 teaspoons oil.
  3. Spoon batter onto the griddle; cook until bubbles form and the edges are dry, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip and cook until browned on the other side, 3 to 5 more minutes. Repeat with remaining batter.

I thought these were perfect!! Just as a side note, the recipe makes about Seven pancakes when using a 1/4″ measuring cup to pour so next time I will double if I have more than 3 people. They were fluffy and delicious.

Love this recipe, it’s my kids all time favorite. I have made this a few times but this time I made a fall style by adding cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.

I just made these and they were delicious, had them for dinner. Only thing I added was a little vanilla, cooked as told in the recipe I will be making them again, I can’t believe I ate the entire batter mix, I’m so stuffed but in a good way.

I put brown sugar and put half the amount specified and it was still nice and sweet (but I’ve noticed that whenever I do an American recipe the sugar is sooo much that for every recipe I half it. Maybe the sugar is made different in America compared to South Africa???????) Back to the review. When I finished mixing the batter I thought it was too runny but it ended up being PERFECT *chef’s kiss* because the pancakes became bigger. Do not press on them when you flip because they rise beautifully when you don’t. All in all, best pancake recipe I’ve ever made in my entire life.

Perfect recipe. At 1/4C sugar it’s not too sweet. Well loved and my go to recipe! No changes except add choc chips for some of the family!

D E L I CIOUS! I don’t usually like pancakes but crave them occasionally. Only change was adding splash of vanilla extract. These are perfectly moist and the sweetness is perfect for us. Will make again for sure. Thinking of giving out as a premade mix as gifts during holidays.

My family LOVES this recipe! I made a few changes. Added pinch of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla. I never have to buy a box mix EVER.

Heaven on a plate! They’re fluffy and amazingly easy to make. I don’t care for syrup on my pancakes so these were perfect. They’re just slightly sweet. No more pancake box mix for me.

Hey, this is an awesome and quick pancake recipe! They’re very fluffy and sweet without syrup (and I don’t like syrup). My only reservation about this recipe is that it tells you to use oil in your pan. If you have a good skillet or griddle, extra oil is unnecessary. From my experience, the oil is just absorbed into your pancake and cooks the surface unevenly. Trust me— skip the pan oil and just pour it right into your non-stick pan for prettier pancakes!
