German Pancakes

Without adding bread flour, an English muffin cannot be considered to be really homemade. It gives the muffins their recognizable and beloved chewy texture. This is the greatest recipe I’ve tested using both bread flour and all-purpose flour.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 45 mins
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  1. ¼ cup butter
  2. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1 cup milk
  4. 6 large eggs, lightly beaten
  5. ⅛ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Melt butter in a medium baking dish.
  2. Mix flour, milk, eggs, and salt in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Bake on center rack in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until golden brown.

So I’m Ellie and I’m 11, I did this recipe for my family of 7, and here’s at tip. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar, and some vanilla. It gives it more flavor! And I cook it in my mom’s crockpot at 350. If you use a crockpot, it only takes about 15 minutes to cook! And in a crockpot, it rises. ALOT.

My friend made it for me and it was delicious. I will make this with a change in eggs. 3 eggs plus 2-3 egg whites. Too much fat in the finished product. I wouldn’t add any sugar or anything else as I prefer savory over sweet. Maybe add some scallions and a bit of cheese. It will be lighter and puff more like a fritatta. For a sweet version I would just add some berries then more berries when it comes out of the oven.

I tripled the recipe because some people in our family eat a lot so I ended up cracking 18 eggs. I did a little less butter on each pan about 1/3 a stick and the batter was pretty smooth. I cracked the eggs straight into the bowl instead of whipping them beforehand. The pancakes themselves were delicious.

I love these. I only add cinnamon. We frequently have guests and I make this for breakfast because it’s a one and done. And my guests LOVE these. They love it better than regular pancakes and they ask for the recipe.

Yes I did make changes and notes but they were so good.

I made this in a 10″ cast iron skillet. Adjusted the recipe as follows: 4 eggs, 2/3 cup milk, 2/3 cup flour, some salt. Added 1/2 tsp vanilla & 1 tsp cinnamon. Put the skillet with just under 1/4 cup butter in the oven to heat up while oven preheated to 400. Watch the butter; you don’t want it to burn. Baked at 20 minutes. Perfect. To me it tastes more like french toast than a pancake, but we loved it. Served with maple syrup.

We’ve been making these for decades. We serve ours with butter, powdered sugar and fresh lemon juice. Also, I bake at 425 for 25 min. They really puff up in a high sided cast iron pan.

I made the recipe exactly as is and split the batter between 3 – 9” round cake pans and baked 350 degrees for approx 25-30 mins.

Except for the 6 eggs instead of 3 or 4 this recipe is exactly like my grandmother’s recipe for yorkshire pudding so I slathered it in beef gravy. Its a great side dish for roast beef!

I made it according to kelseydawg. Turned out perfect with Jimmy Dean mild country sausage on the side and lots of syrup

Super easy to follow and delicious ! Made it for Father’s Day for the whole family with some strawberries, blueberries, syrup and whip cream on top! We have visitors in town so it fed one piece for 8.

it did better with a creme sause then a fruit sause

What a fun new way to have pancake breakfast. Our family likes to put fresh strawberries and whipped cream inside. Also my favorite way is 2 or 3 over medium eggs with a few pieces of thick bacon along with melted butter and maple syrup.

This was such an enjoyable thing to make! I highly recommend this!
