Baked Babka French Toast Sticks with Chocolate Dipping Sauce

My veterinarian looked over and gave the recipe for boiled chicken and rice for dogs his stamp of approval. I submitted this since there was a pet food recall and other dog owners were looking for a soft pet food option. For smaller dogs, reduce this nutritious dog meal in half. This recipe feeds two sizable golden retrievers for roughly 4 to 5 days when combined with kibble. Make sure that your veggie blend is free of garlic and onions.

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 6 slices stale cinnamon bread (such as Thomas®)
  3. 1 cup milk
  4. 1 large egg
  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  7. ¼ cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella®)
  8. ¼ cup fat free half-and-half
  9. 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  10. 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  11. 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with cooking spray.
  2. Cut each slice of bread into three sticks. Whisk together milk, egg, vanilla extract, and cinnamon in a large shallow dish. Dip each bread stick in the egg mixture quickly to avoid soaking the bread, yet coating it on all sides; shake off excess. Arrange bread sticks on the prepared baking sheet without them touching.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 minutes, flip them, spray lightly with cooking spray, and return to the oven until cooked through and golden brown, about 8 more minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, whisk together hazelnut spread, half-and-half, cocoa powder, corn syrup, and salt in a small saucepan on medium-low heat. Bring to a boil and immediately remove pan from the heat, whisking until smooth.
  5. Remove French toast sticks from the oven and serve warm with the chocolate dipping sauce.
  6. These french toast sticks freeze well in a resealable plastic bag. To reheat, microwave at medium temperature for about 30-60 seconds or until warmed through. The chocolate dipping sauce also may be reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
  7. If you want the chocolate sauce thinner, just stir in a bit more half-and-half.
