Over 150 years have passed since my family first received this recipe. Nothing has changed at all!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 50 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 12
Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

  1. 3 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 ¼ cups milk, or more as needed
  3. 1 cup raisins
  4. ¾ cup white sugar
  5. 2 tablespoons caraway seeds (Optional)
  6. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  7. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  8. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  9. ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch round glass baking dish.
  2. Mix flour, milk, raisins, sugar, caraway seeds, vegetable oil, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl until dough is not wet enough to pour and not dry enough to handle. Add more milk if dough is too dry. Transfer dough to the baking dish.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes.

We really like the texture of this wonderfully simple recipe. I made this bread without the raisins in deference to the picky person in my household and I used a multigrain flour because that’s what I had in the cupboard. We did find it a bit sweet, so next time I’ll try a bit less sugar.

This Irish Soda Bread is excellent. Easy and quick to make, and delicious! The inside is very moist, and the crunchy part on the outside is excellent! I first soaked the raisins (I used golden raisins) in very hot water to plump them up. It was the perfect amount of raisins. It was probably the best Soda Bread I’ve ever had. Thanks for posting.

This is excellent, with no changes! I’m going through a “bread baking” stage lately, much to my friends & neighbors delight! Please keep in mind that your soda & baking powder loose potency after about a year after opening. If you have any problems with bread (or baked goods of ANY kind), check the dates on the containers. I use markers to put date opened on bottom of can or bottle of powder or baking soda, & throw away after a year. Most professional food service do this. HTH!!! Blessings!
