Orange Scones with Orange Glaze

  4.7 – 18 reviews  • Scone Recipes

This recipe was found online and was slightly modified to make it “more orangey.” It’s incredibly simple and wonderful! The texture of the finished scones is fantastic.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 scones

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  3. 2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
  4. ½ teaspoon baking soda
  5. ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  6. ¼ teaspoon salt
  7. ½ stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
  8. 2 ½ tablespoons orange zest
  9. 6 tablespoons orange juice
  10. 1 medium egg
  11. 1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar
  12. 1 tablespoon milk, or as needed
  13. ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
  14. 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  15. 4 teaspoons orange juice
  16. 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease with cooking spray.
  2. Mix flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter. Mix in orange zest.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Whisk orange juice, egg, and vinegar together and pour into the flour mixture. Stir until moistened and sticky.
  4. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead gently about 10 times. Pat into a 6×8-inch rectangle. Cut rectangle into 4 squares; cut each square diagonally into 8 triangles. Arrange scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with milk and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  6. Make the orange glaze while the scones are baking. Mix 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar and orange juice until thick and smooth; glaze should drip slowly off the back of a spoon. Mix in orange zest.
  7. Dunk warm scones in the glaze to fully coat the tops. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
  8. If you like less orange flavor, add less zest. If you want more orange flavor, add more.

DELICIOUS!!! I made these exactly as the recipe read. I thought they were plenty orangey. Will definitely make these again!

Quick, easy, well written instructions, very tasty! They were a hit at a neighborhood potluck!

Loved these so much! Used Clementines instead of oranges and a dash of lemon juice. Got rave reviews from friends

I have made this recipe several times. Always a winner! I bake them about 12 minutes to get a pretty brown glow. The frosting is just slightly runny; I like to spread it on rather than pour it on. A teaspoon or two less orange juice does the trick.

I can’t eat a lot of carbs, so I’m waiting for customer feedback on this one, but the little crumbs I tasted were fantastic. Read the reviews, many said not “orangey” enough, so I added a healthy dose of Nielsen-Massey orange extract to both the dough and the glaze. This is a winner! Thank you, Erika!!

These were perfect. Didn’t change a thing. I was so happy as I transferred from cookie sheet to wire rack. So light ! My family loved them. I tried the option to change number of servings but it doesn’t work.

It was really not worth it. I’ve made scones before and yes they can be messy. These in particular were incredibly messy. I only got 6 scones rather than the 8. I even added extra orange zest and I had to add some extra orange juice and it STILL isn’t orange enough. They didn’t taste that great so it wasn’t even worth it.

Thank you so much for this recipe. They came out perfect. I didn’t even use the glaze but did put the milk and sugar on top. I used homegrown oranges. Never made scones before and these were definitely a success.

Very good. Excellent in my opinion with just a few changes: 1) instead of all-white flour, use 1 c white and 1/3 c wheat; 2) add an extra tbsp of zest to batter; 3) put BOTH tbsp sugar into the batter; 4) add 2 tbsp corn starch to glaze

These were quite good. I was, however, surprised that the orange flavor wasn’t more prominent. The recipe called for 2 ½ tablespoons of orange zest. I zested 2 large oranges plus a small one to get the amount required. In addition, there is another 6 ounces of orange juice in the batter. That being said, these Orange Scones with an Orange were tender and moist, and I’d make them again.

I think the recipe is great and me and my mom made it with a lot of extra orange zest and it came out great

These are amazing! Very good, not to sweet, nice orange flavour. My only complaint is with the recipe itself. It calls for a half stick of butter, which is 1/4 cup. Why not just ask for a quarter cup??? Makes no sense to me. But the recipe is a winner!

My first time making scones from scratch. Our neighbors have an orange tree, so I am always looking for orange recipes. I had no problem with this recipe. My wife loved the results. They were moist and delicious. The only thing I did different was use 1/2 plus 1/3 cup of whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup of all purpose flour. Dunking the scones in the glaze left a lot of zest in the bowl, so I used the back of the spoon to spread the remaining glaze and zest on the scones.

Great taste! Proportions for the glaze are definitely off. Stated amount of sugar and juice comes out super super runny. Updated recipe would get 5 stars.

For the scone, I used at least 1 1/4 cup flour. Keep adding until the dough sticks together. For the glaze, I used only 2 Tbl. granular sugar, 1 Tbl. orange juice, and 3/4 tsp. orange zest. Rolled it into a circle about 8 inches and cut into 8 wedges. I made it for my pastor & think he will love it!

I’m an experienced baker but have never made scones! I love citrus so I decided to give this recipe a try. The dough was extremely sticky and the scones were difficult to transfer to the baking sheet but they turned out incredibly light with a little crust on the bottom. The only thing I added was a pinch of salt to the glaze and extra zest throughout. Delish!

Awesome!!

The icing was too runny. I tried adding more sugar but it was still not thickened. The taste is fantastic!
