Indian Fry Bread

For a football party, this is a fantastic dip. Leave out the spicy ingredients if you don’t like them. Additionally, I have increased the pepperoni while using only red pepper flakes. Serve with crackers or baguettes

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 1 mins
Total Time: 16 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 10 fried breads

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. ¾ cup cold water
  5. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  6. oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir in cold water and vegetable oil until dough comes together into a ball.
  2. Set dough on a floured surface. Pinch off ten pieces the size of golf balls, roll into balls, and flatten each into a round. Make a small hole in the center of each round.
  3. Fill a deep skillet with oil to 3/4 inch; heat over medium-high heat. Add dough rounds in batches and fry until golden brown, about 20 seconds per side. Drain on paper towels.

Years ago I made this, but I added cinnamon, sugar and raisins to mine. We some times dipped it into Pure maple syrup, or just served with honey and powdered sugar. Mine tasted much better than the plain one listed here. I am going to make some soon.

So good and easy to make. I followed the recipe exactly. These remind me of the Fry Bread I used to get at the fairgrounds in Arizona as a kid. I topped them with refried beans and cheese.

I’ve been wanting to try making fry bread and saw the reviews for this recipe, so I thought I’d try it. No flavor at all. It’s more like a deep fried biscuit. Won’t be making it again.

Super easy. I will probably make 5 big ones instead of 10 small ones next time. I put this together first so it could rest and then put the rest of my Indian taco ingredients together. This was perfect!

I usually only get to eat this when the fair comes to town. Now i can make frybread when i want. Recipe was easy and not many ingredients also. Tasted so good as Indian taco and cinnamon and melted butter. Thanks for sharing.

Made this using cold milk instead of water.not successful, didn’t really smooth out. Was more like eating dumplings. Tasty though.

Made according to recipe just made them smaller since we rolled them in cinnamon sugar for our dessert after Tikka Misala and jasmine rice. They were very sticky to work with. Maybe more flour then let them rise a bit as some suggested. Kinda dense. Otherwise they were good, very tasty and the plate empty by the end of the evening. Recipe was easy enough also.

This recipe is simple and quick, I usually let my fry bread sit cover up for about 2 minutes while I get the oil hot. So it rises a little. It makes the best fry bread, you can add powdered sugar, or add all your taco trimmings on it. My husband is Native American and he loves my fry bread. He says it’s not like grandma, but it will do… lol

I had to double up to make a me sized portion. I’ve also made with garlic for flavor.

Great recipe! Turned out yummy. Don’t let them fry too long or they may get dry.

Great recipe! I made this with my sister (ok, she made it and I read the instructions). This is the same bread that Taco Bell uses for their chalupas. This was a very messy endeavor but well worth the effort. If you have leftovers, throw them in the oven for a couple mins because it is much better warm. This recipe is definitely a keeper!! Thanks for providing us with the recipe!!

made it with gluten free flour. had to add considerably more water, but it was good.

I really like them …but I had no idea how flat to roll them ….FYI …thin as you can get them and put multiple fork holes to avoid bubbles. I added salt after as well. I think they would be good with herbs for a burger bun or add some sugar for a dessert bread ??
