Diana’s Hawaiian Bread Rolls

  4.3 – 103 reviews

This is the closest one can go to Win Schuler’s®, the fabled restaurant where my mother loved to eat at “bar scheez.” In our home, it became a mainstay. The spread has an intriguing taste thanks to the horseradish. People will be pleading with you for the recipe, and you won’t be able to put an end to consuming it! Horseradish can be added gradually to suit your taste, starting with less. Serve alongside pretzels, crackers, pita chips, or bagel chips. Wonderful even with celery sticks! Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Additional Time: 2 hrs 25 mins
Total Time: 3 hrs
Servings: 12
Yield: 1 dozen rolls

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  2. 1 egg
  3. 1 teaspoon salt
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  6. 1 tablespoon molasses
  7. 1 tablespoon honey
  8. 5 tablespoons white sugar
  9. 2 tablespoons dry milk powder
  10. 2 tablespoons butter flavored shortening
  11. 4 ½ cups bread flour
  12. 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle for a 2 pound batch; press Start. The dough can be a bit sticky, so you may want to add a little bit more bread flour as it mixes.
  2. When the dough cycle is complete, turn the risen dough out on a lightly floured surface and divide into twelve equal pieces. Form the pieces into rounds and place on lightly greased baking sheets. Cover the rolls with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, until golden brown.

I prepared the recipe and it is excellent, but I added 2 teaspoons of baking powder and replaced the molasses with honey. I also replaced the shortening with butter and powdered milk with Chantilly cream powder.

I didn’t use a bread machine bc I don’t have one. I read the reviews and skipped the lemon extract. I think next time I’ll make it with brown sugar instead of white sugar. I put the yeast and sugar and water in a bowl first then added the rest of the wet ingredients and added the flour and salt last. My 7 yo stirred until it was sticky and then we put out some flour and kneaded it for 3-5 minutes. Then I sprayed it with olive oil and put it in the microwave (after heating a cup of water) to rise. Left it for an hour came home and kneaded into little balls and then baked 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Simple and tasty enough.

This recipe for the Hawaiian rolls is delicious! I did not add the lemon extract and used real butter extra vanilla and powdered coconut milk. I also glazed the tops with egg and milk before baking.

These are the best rolls that I have ever tasted! I have been making these for a few years now and they have become THE dinner roll asked for by my family and friends. I followed the recipe except I substitue almond extract for the lemon.

I can’t believe this only has a 4 star rating! I have been making these rolls for years and they’re the best I’ve ever had. They have that same good yeasty flavor that everyone is looking for in a dinner roll. You won’t be disappointed.

This has been my “Go To” recipe for homemade rolls for many years! I follow the recipe with two changes – I use real butter instead of the shortening. I also omit the lemon extract. They turn out perfect every time and now my adult children expect and look forward to them at all the family dinners! Thank you for the recipe!

My mom love it.

I read the reviews on this receipe and decided I do a few tweaks but nothing significant. Instead of butter flavored shortening I went with butter, and instead of 5 tablespoons of white sugar I did 2 white and 3 brown. I didn’t use the lemon extract, made 18 rolls, and brushed the rolls with a water egg mixture. Mine weren’t the most beautful looking but the taste was great. I will make these again and might double the batch and try freezing some.

to much lemon, will need to reduce next time

this was my first attempt at bread. I didn’t use molasses and didn’t use the lemon extract. i upped the butter to 4 tbs, doubled honey and vanilla extract. I made about 18 large rolls without the bread machine. they were close to the Hawaiian sweet rolls we had on my honey moon, but it wasn’t all that sweet. next time I may do a dough adding a splash of pineapple juice in the water.

I made these specifically for a recipe that called for purchased Hawaiian sweet rolls and they didn’t disappoint. Not having read the reviews, I’m glad I didn’t have lemon extract, so didn’t add that. The only other changes I made was I used real butter in place of shortening, used about 5 cups of flour, and made them in my Bosch mixer instead of a bread maker. I ate one of the rolls and it was delicious. I made 12 rolls and one loaf of bread in an 8×4 pan.

Consider using pineapple extract instead of lemon extract for a more authentic Hawaiian taste.

After reading all the reviews I made this. They are really wonderful. I deleted the Lemon and the butter flavoring. They were large enough to use as Ham Buns Next time I would make 24 instead of 12. Used my bread machine and I will do these again and again!! Enjoy Judy

Leave the lemon extract out completely.

These are very good with a nice texture and perfect level of sweetness. The only thing stopping this recipe from a five star rating is the lemon extract. At the very least it should be reduced to 14 tsp, but in the future I will omit it completely. Very good recipe other than the lemon.
Misty Cochran
They were decent but my family didn’t want me to make these again.
Jose Kramer
Decent sweet roll. The flour needs to be adjusted depending on climate and preference.

I was expecting a sweet bread like a kings Hawaiian roll. This just tasted like a plain roll. I think this is a good base recipe to start with, but it needs more sugar. As other reviewers said, leave out the lemon extract.

I made these rolls for a pot luck. I did some substitutions using honey instead of molasses, cutting white sugar to 2 Tbls and adding 3 Tbls brown sugar, and I used 2 Tbls butter instead of shortening. I can’t see where the lemon extract would add anything to the flavor, so I didn’t add it. I see where some reviewers did some changes too. These were very tasty with my additions deletions. I will make them frequently when I need a good roll recipe.

These were really good but didn’t taste like hawaiian bread. They would be fine most of the time but I was really craving the real sweet Hawaian bread
