The combination of hash brown potatoes, cheese, sour cream, soup, and cereal crumbs makes for a satisfying comfort food dish. This meal is fantastic and very simple to prepare.

Ingredients
- 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup whole wheat flour
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 1 ¼ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- ¼ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons honey, or more to taste
- 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
- 1 cup dried currants
- ⅓ cup golden raisins
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
- Whisk all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Cut butter into flour mixture using a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
- Beat buttermilk, egg, honey, and orange zest together in a bowl. Pour buttermilk mixture, currants, and raisins into flour mixture; stir with a wooden spoon until a wet, sticky dough comes together.
- Turn dough out onto a well-floured work surface; press dough together into a soft ball of dough and cut into 2 pieces. Form each half into a smooth, round loaf. Transfer to prepared baking sheet and let rest for 15 minutes. Cut a 1/2-inch deep “X” into the top of each loaf with a serrated knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and fragrant, about 45 minutes. Transfer loaves to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Can you believe I actually prefer it denser and harder! This came out really tender. I used 2 cups wholewheat flour, 1 cup spelt flour, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, and 1/4 cup oatmeal. Instead of all the orange zest and dried fruit, I added 2.5 TBSP brown sugar. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t use more whole weat in this recipe! Also, I baked this as one large loaf and inside a round, 10.5″, high-sided cast iron pan. I also brushed on the last bit of buttermilk/egg/honey/sugar mixture on top and sprinkled the top with oats prior to baking. Next time, I might try to omit the egg to make the bread more dense, and add more oats and seeds or something to give it more of a rustic chunkiness like some of the ones I had in Ireland.
It was horrible! I followed the recipe exactly. Just plain tasteless. I just hate wasting expensive ingredients like the buttermilk, egg & raisins.
This bread was wonderful and easy! It went perfectly with the Dublin Coddle I made for St. Patty’s Day. I’m not too fond of raisins typically but went ahead and made as written. The flavor from the dried fruit was excellent and subtle. It was so tasty with just good butter. I will definitely not be waiting until next St. Patrick’s Day to make again. Thanks, Chef John!
Made this recipe for a St Patty’s Day dinner party. It was a hit!! With one exception, I followed the recipe exactly. The grocery store didn’t have golden raisins so instead I used dried apricots that I cut into raisin sized pieces. Definitely will make this bread again!
This recipe is great abs has become one of my favorite traditions. I HIGHLY recommend checking out chef John’s YouTube video for a helpful and hilarious visual aid.
Delicious! This will be my go to from now on! Perfect with my St Patrick’s Day dinner!
The best Soda bread recipe… we love it! I have done it so many times with the exact instructions. I believe this is a perfect recipe with consistent results and wonderful taste!
Saw this recipe on YouTube yesterday! Made it today! Delicious!!! ?? Thanks Chef John!!!
Made some changes to use what we had in the pantry. Used 1/4 tsp orange extract and regular raisins. I think the flavor would be better with the right ingredients but flavor and texture are good. Will make again. Thanks Chef John
Love it! I made the recipe exactly as written. The result was 2 perfect very tasty loaves.
I forgot my gash & it was still delicious!
It’s in the Oven now. Hopefully, it will Taste Deeelicious.
This is the best soda bread recipe I’ve ever used. I find it bakes through better if I divide in in half, dampen the two rounds and roll each one in turbinado sugar before baking. Yum, yum!
I would cut back baking time by 5 minutes
First time ever making any bread and this turned out fantastic. I was so elated because it looked beautiful, tasted incredibly delicious and was so easy. It makes 2 small loaves so I cut one in half and gave to my 2 friends and kept a whole one for ourselves. I don’t like to watch videos unless they’re Chef John because he is so funny.
thank you chef john, i live in new york and because of the current coronavirus situation, i was not able to celebrate st paddys day like i normally would, but today, even though i’m in isolation- I wanted to celebrate my irish ancestors. this is an amazing recipe, easy to follow, and making this brought me right back to my childhood, thank you for providing a wonderful recipe that brightened my day.
Just made this and very good. Wasn’t dry, both fruits made it tasty and using honey much better. Great with coffee or tea.
Very good. Came out looking exactly like the photograph even though I forgot to let the dough rest as instructed.
I made it today. I just use raisins. It looked almost like Chef John version. I also had it with Irish butter. It was delicious. Thanks for this recipe.
Love this recipe! So easy to do and turns out perfect
Followed the recipe very closely. Turned out great. I also made the irresistible Irish Soda Bread, which is my favorite. Really good.
