Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. ½ cup white sugar
  3. 1 tablespoon baking powder
  4. 1 teaspoon salt
  5. ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  6. 1 dash ground nutmeg
  7. 2 tablespoons melted butter
  8. ½ cup milk
  9. 1 egg, beaten
  10. 1 quart oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Mix in butter until crumbly. Stir in milk and egg until smooth.
  3. Knead lightly, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll or pat to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter, or use two round biscuit cutters of different sizes.
  4. Lay doughnuts in hot oil, a few at a time. Do not overcrowd the pan, or oil may overflow. Fry, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

As written giving these 3 stars. Bland, and the consistency was that of a very thick muffin batter. I came back to look at reviews and many mentioned they had to add more flour. I knew I would need to add more cinnamon and nutmeg to the batter but still felt like something was missing. Vanilla. I wish I had added vanilla. With adding more flour, the co district was great and they produced a very nice fluffy donut but even rolled in cinnamon sugar there was a blandness. I think vanilla would have helped. I will use this recipe again because they made a nice donut but definitely lack in flavor.

Thought I’d find a different donut recipe to try. Sorry I’ll stick to plain flour, baking soda and Greek yoghurt. Chucked these out, bit disgusting. Crumbled and sucked up the oil.

So – this didn’t go as suggested in the directions! Step three suggests that the dough should be cohesive enough to be cuttable with a biscuit cutter… This is very misleading as it suggests that the dough should be fairly firm! We made the recipe as suggested (all ingredients): Flour 120g Sugar 100g Baking Powder 1 Tablespoon Salt 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg – Dash Melted butter 28.4g Milk 118mL 1 (medium sized) Egg, beaten. This came out very ‘runny’ – far too runny to consider putting anywhere near a biscuit cutter! It might be suitable for a piping bag though. We then added a further 160g of flour (in 30g aliquots) to get the mixture to something that was cohesive enough to cut with a biscuit cutter. Because we had added so much more flour, we added another teaspoon each of Nutmeg and Cinnamon to the recipe to ensure it had enough flavour. This way we were able to make ‘floppy’ doughnut shapes (with a hole in the middle) that we could cook in the deep fat fryer. The results were pleasant to eat but were much more like a ‘cake’ texture than doughnut! Next time we will make the recipe as suggested but then just form loose ‘balls’ of dough and drop them into the oil with no attempt to make anything like a ring doughnut from the dough first. This might make a much more authentic doughnut than what we ended up with this time. so the 2* rating reflects that the recipe is very misleading in its directions – at least for us!

Way too sticky. Following recipe exactly . Didn’t omit anything, but why would you omit cinnamon and nutmeg and reduce servings and split an egg in 3? The recipe calls for 2. Won’t try these again .

Deep fried them in tallow for Chanukah, they were delicious. Threw them in some powdered sugar for topping. They were very easy to make and took no time at all. This is a keeper!!

Easy, tasty. I put sliced apples in the middle of two thin sheets and it turned out great. this needs very little mixing. I used a plug in fryer and checked the oil temp. 3 min for a 1/4 inch piece of dough was plenty. Not sure what the people who had problems did, but my guess is they had old oil, old baking powder, gluten free flour, and no thermometer. Maybe they are just the kind of people who claim ” I did exactly what the directions said” when in fact they have no idea how to follow directions beyond ” click here” Oh, I used more nutmeg because I like nutmeg.
