Amish Friendship Chocolate Bread

  4.4 – 88 reviews  • Sourdough Bread Recipes

This is a wonderful alternative to the standard Amish Friendship Bread. My relatives compare it to eating chocolate cake. This bread freezes well and is a wonderful present.

I made this as muffins, and this made 24 regular muffins and 25 mini muffins. I added chocolate chips, a package of instant coffee and a couple of big spoonfuls of sour cream. the big muffins took about 20 minutes in the oven and the minis took about 15 minutes. turned out

Delicious! I spread peanut butter on each slice for an even more delicious snack!

Definitely be sure to add 1 Tbsp cocoa powder to keep your bread from having a greenish color in the middle. I also added about 1 Cup mini chocolate chips.

I use a pkg of chocolate & a pkg of chocolate fudge pudding mix. I also add about 3/4 cup of mini semi-sweet chocolate chips. I haven’t had any complaints from my taste testers! They are very moist & delicious. I bake at 325 F for about 35 minutes.

This was pretty good. Added mini chocolate chips. Half the oil can easily be replaced with applesauce to cut calories and fat. Freezes well, too.

Great recipe! I made this in a bundt pan as other reviewers have mentioned. It was fantastic, almost like a cake! I didn’t have enough vegetable oil, so I used 3/4 c vegetable and 1/4 c extra virgin olive oil. It was very moist and dense. I also just used 1 large box of chocolate fudge pudding instead of 2 smaller ones. I will definitely be making this again.

this is a great recipe I made just like you wrote and it turned out perfect—thanks—I bake every Sunday for my Sunday School ,all adults, and every body said I did good —I took all the credit–Not true I told them where I got the recipe–keep up the good works

This is one of my favorite things to make! My children also LOVE to help, which can be a bit stressful. I have successfully made this recipe in the worlds most finicky oven. If your bread didn’t turn out, check the ingredients list and give it one more try. I have had it turn green, just once. The only difference was using shortening and flour to grease the pan. All the other times I used cooking spray with flour. I’m about ready to make some as my birthday cake. I bake it in the 9″ rounds, fill it with dark chocolate ganache, ice it with chocolate silk frosting, and give it a drizzle with the rest of the ganache. It will be my birthday cake from now on.

Tried this recipe for the first time and will be making these again! The only think I changed was I made muffins instead of bread. The muffins were moist, and baked really nice. The recipe makes 2dozen muffins and baked for 20min.

made just as written, but I used sugar free/ fat free pudding and it turned out great!

This turned out great!! I used sugar free instant choc pudding and the “quick Amish bread starter” given by another reviewer. I also added a cup of semi sweet chocolate chips. The only thing that gave me trouble was this took FOREVER to bake all the way through. I swear by the time I was done I had baked it nearly 75 minutes! At 60 minutes it was still completely undone in the middle. I’m not sure if increasing the oven temp from the get go would help with that. Although even with all that baking, the bread was still soft and cake like and SO delicious. Definitely a keeper!!!

yep…the bottom 1/3 of my bread turned green. i used chocolate fudge pudding that i bought the day before and used NO metal of any kind. can anyone tell me what happened. i mixed it well but gently. but it was great anyway!!

I made this bread and my family loved it. Only thing i did different is I used 2 boxes of pudding and added one bag of chocolate chips. It was a lot like a brownie just a tad lighter.

This made less than what I was expecting. Did anyone else experience this? It tasted great, altough it might could’ve used more chocolate somewhere (coming from a chocolate fan) It was a little drier than I expected, but this was probably because I over baked it a little. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

This recipe turned out great. I did four mini loaves, which took about 50 minutes (do not fill your container more than half full! this stuff puffs right up). My pudding package sizes were a bit different; I used 3.9 oz of Instant Chocolate and 1.34 oz of Instant Sugar-Free Vanilla, since that’s the closest I could get with what I had! Then added 2 T. of cocoa powder, after reading all the reviewers wishing for more chocolate flavor. The only other thing I did different was coat the pan with cinnamon/sugar, kuz I love cinnamon flavored chocolate. The taste was awesome, wonderful texture; will make again!
