Ingredients
- ½ onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon rosemary
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 ½ pounds flank steak
Instructions
- Whisk onion, garlic, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, rosemary, salt, and pepper together in a mixing bowl.
- Place flank steak into a large resealable plastic bag. Pour marinade into the bag and coat steak with the marinade. Squeeze excess air from the bag and seal. Marinate in the refrigerator at least 30 minutes, up to 2 days.
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
- Remove steak from marinade and shake to remove excess liquid. Reserve marinade.
- Cook steak until firm, hot in the center, and just turning from pink to grey, 6 to 8 minutes per side, brushing occasionally with reserved marinade. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 150 degrees F (65 degrees C). Remove steak to a cutting board and rest meat 5 minutes before slicing thinly across the grain.
- If you wish to serve extra marinade with the finished beef, pour marinade into a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 10 minutes.
- The nutrition data for this recipe includes the full amount of the marinade ingredients. The actual amount of the marinade consumed will vary.

Excellent EVERY TIME. I’ve made this recipe at least half dozen times and each time to comments of “Love it”, ‘Do it again”, etc.
I follow the recipe but I marinade for 24 hours then place it in a vacuum sealed bag and freeze it. Comes out more tender and flavourable.
My husband and I both liked it. He said to add it to the rotation.
Did it as written, let it marinade overnight, and it turned out perfect. Even my wife ate some, and she doesn’t like beef.
My husband actually exclaimed after the first bite “wow this one is really good!” I did not have rosemary but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. This one’s a keeper!
Really like this. Probably should have marinated it a little bit longer than I did, but the meat was very tasty. Yes, it was a little chewy so next time I will marinate longer. It’s a keeper.
The marinade added wonderful flavor to the steak. It marinated for 6-7 hours. Our steak took a lot longer to cook than the recipe suggested.
Don’t cook a steak to 150 degrees. Ever. But it’s a good marinade.
Excellent!!!!all I can say
The Best Marinade. Period.
This is PERFECT, as is!
I did add a piece of minced ginger from my garden. Amazingly tender and that’s not easy with flank steak. So good!
This is our new go to marinade for flank steak! Like others we didn’t add salt and instead added a tablespoon of sesame oil. Love love love this recipe, thanks for sharing!
I followed the recipe exactly with one exception. I took the excess marinade and boiled it down for about 5 minutes. Served it as a sauce for the flank steak! A bit vinegar ish but I liked it! Both men at the table said it was delish!
Have made this twice now adhering to recipe. Fantastic – all of my guests have raved about it!
It turned out great. Everyone loved it.
soooooooooo goooooooooooood making it again : )
Didn’t have any onion at the time so I left it out and the family loved it. Will definitely be adding it to the rotation.
Marinated my flank steak 2 days, turning the Ziploc bag over after the first day. Grilled it to 140 degree internal temperature and then covered it and let stand for 5 minutes. OMGosh is this delicious! Thank you for sharing!!
It tasted like it was marinated in vinegar only. Three of us ate it and all agreed. Would never make a gain
Excellent marinade! I used a couple tablespoons of dried minced onion instead of the 1/2 cup of fresh. Will definitely use this again.
