Eye of Round Steak and Ketchup

  4.2 – 32 reviews  • Round Steak Recipes

This is what I made in place of tomato sauce to put on pizza, but I think it was even better as a dip the next day. I only used approximately a cup of the ingredients, but if you’re making it for a party, you might want to double or treble the quantities.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr 10 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 15 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  2. 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  3. 1 (1 1/2 pound) round steak, cut into serving-size pieces
  4. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or as needed
  5. 1 (14 ounce) bottle ketchup
  6. 1 onion, chopped
  7. 2 cups warm water

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a bowl. Gently press the steak into the flour mixture to coat and shake off the excess flour.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the beef until brown on all sides, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove beef from skillet and drain excess oil. Stir the ketchup, onion, and water into the skillet, then add the meat. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until tender, about 1 hour.

My mother made this when I was a child. It brings back a lot of happy memories. I LOVE it!

Add another layer or two of flavor by substituting ketchup with bottled chili sauce.

I had 3 large steaks for about 1.2 lbs. I decreased the water and ketchup by about 1/2, and added in about a 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce. The steaks came out perfectly tender. My husband loved the sauce. I liked it ok. The timing for the cooking was perfect.

I have been making this all my life. I use beef tips and add cut up bell peppers. Cook in roasting pan without lid until beef is tender. Serve over , noodles, rice, mashed potatoes I only add 1 cup water . The ketchup will cook down to a nice broth

The meat was too tough. Other than that it was good

This was delicious. I have always followed my mom’s direction to always tenderize a round steak. Also, I have to admit I added some fresh ground pepper, fresh carrots, worcestershire sauce, and Cajun seasonings. I adore fresh pepper and Cajun seasonings! Thank you. My husband loved it and I plan to make it for our grandchildren!

This was tasty, very easy, but I would back off a little on the ketchup, add garlic and saute onions first. You can really add pretty much anything to this. I served over mini-gnocchi and everyone really liked it. Be prepared for a strong vinegar taste as that comes out with the ketchup, but it is surprisingly interesting flavor. Good Luck!

I had never used round steak and wanted something new for dinner. I followed the directions exactly and this was delicious! Saved to my favorites as it was so good and easy!

Made this exactly as it said and it came out tender and yummy.

So simple, just follow the recipe and serve over home made mash potatoes. You will love it….

Very easy, very tasty, plus it’s versatile. I followed recipe exactly, but I had some mushrooms calling out to me. So I threw those in with the onions. Turned out great. Served with steamed rice and sautéed squash (zucchini & yellow) with Parmesan. Definitely will use again.

Tasted like cardbord with ketchup. Never again.

A surprising use of ketchup. I love vinegar, and the vinegar flavor really comes out during cooking. I really like this.

I I was kinda afraid about it having so much ketchup so I changed alil bit the recipe, I added 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder and 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1/2 Teaspoon ground pepper, I gotta say it was delicious! Doing this recipe again soon!

Pretty good.Did not use flour, followed Sue’s recipes advice & took lid off last 15 min. I used a jar of canned tomatoes & 3 big squirts of ketchup. Needs more seasoning, i will use cavenders &/or old bay next time to spice it up a bit. Rolls were good with this dish.

Great recipe! Fast. Easy. Great taste. I especially liked the “ketchup” gravy. Thanks!

The boy and I didn’t care for this one.

Had the butcher put the meat through the tenderizer; added paprika as some suggested; baked covered in the oven at 350-375 bout an hour. Excellent – had no leftovers!

I have made a similar recipe to this for years (got it from my Mom who got it from my Grandma). I use the onion and add baby carrots. Delicious!!! Also I cook it in the oven on 350.

I love it when simple stuff works out so great. I might add a little bit of Worcestershire or BBQ sauce next time just to experiment.
