Ingredients
- Nonstick cooking spray or butter, for preparing the baking pan
- One 15.25-ounce box classic yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, plus more for garnish
- One 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
Instructions
- For the bottom cake layer: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Liberally prepare a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with the nonstick method of your choice. Line the pan with parchment paper, then grease the parchment.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the yellow cake mix, butter and eggs until combined and thick. Evenly pat the batter into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- For the gooey top layer: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract, salt and eggs over low speed. Once the sugar is fully incorporated, turn the mixer speed to high. Continue beating until all ingredients are well blended.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan on top of the bottom layer and spread it evenly across the pan using a spatula. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The center should still be gooey and will look under-baked.
- Let cool on a wire rack for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve in the pan at room temperature.

I haven’t tried this recipe but had to comment on those saying Ms. Delk didn’t create this, and Paula Deen did.
If you go back and watch the episode with Ms. Delk, she does NOT say that she created it. She talks about it being a recipe that was baked in her household while growing up. GZ clearly states the cake originated in St Louis in the 1930’s.
I was attracted to the ease of the recipe and I generally like doctored up box cake mixes. This was fine but not my favorite and not going on my repeat list.
It tastes too strongly of that “boxed mix” flavor in the crust and the cream cheese filling wasn’t as tangy as I was hoping for.
However, it was easy and the kids liked it.
The cake is good but I’ve been making this very same recipe since 1987. It’s not new and she didn’t create it.
Know what? I was and still am a big Paula Deen fan. But it’s not Ms. Delk’s fault that the Food Network had a very nasty parting of the ways with Paula (a BIG mistake by my reckoning). She made a very tasty, very quick version of the Gooey Cake, which was a St. Louis phenomenon I believe before Ms. Deen found it anyway.
This cake is tasty and oh so easy to make. Besides, Ms. Delk was a delightful presence on The Kitchen. Good guest, and delicious recipe! Many thanks.
Glad to see young people keeping family tradition alive but Paula Deen introduced to these years ago. The Kitchen staff pretended this was a totally new concept.
