Ingredients
- 5 cups water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 5 whole star anise pods*
- 8 black tea bags
- 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
- Ice
- Mint leaves, for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, bring the water, sugar and star anise pods to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and add the tea bags. Allow the tea to steep and cool to room temperature, about 1 hour. Discard the star anise pods and the tea bags and whisk in the condensed milk. Pour into a large pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until ready to serve.
- To serve: Pour the tea into 4 ice-filled glasses. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve.
Reviews
I use about half the amount of sugar, plus I put in a cinnamon stick and a couple crushed cardamom pods. Maybe a bit of vanilla extract too. Using rooibos or plain black tea works equally well.
Excellent
Way too sweet. Should have read the reviews. I liked the anise flavor though.
Very one-note and WAY, WAY too sweet. Maybe Giada uses cheap grocery-store star anise. When I made it with Penzey’s really fresh star anise it was way too strong. Needs something besides anise and needs about half the amount of Condensed milk. It was so thick as to be almost syrupy. WIll search for a better and more authentic recipe.
I wish I had read the reviews before I made this. I was WAY too sweet…almost sickly sweet! I would make this again, but leave out the sugar. As recommended by another review, the sugar in the sweetened condensed milk should be more than enough!
I agree with others that this doesn’t taste like the iced tea you get at Thai restaurants but it’s still pretty darn good! I took advice from other reviewers and reduced the sugar. I only added a 1/4 cup of sugar instead of a 1/2 cup and it was plenty sweet for me! I will definitely make again!
DELICIOUS AND FRESH!
This is SO GOOD! We did cut back on the sugar, due to one of my daughters not being able to have to much sugar. My 9 year old daughter makes this and its her special thing for me 🙂 We love Giada and have been cooking lots of her meals. This tea is wonderful! You must try it! You must make the whole meal to go with it, we loved it!
Finally! Finally a Thai Iced Tea recipe I can do at home. The flavor isn’t exactly like what I’ve had in Thai restaurants but it is close enough for my tastes. I do think I will either halve the sugar or omit it entirely next time, as the drink was plenty sweet. Thanks, Giada!
Fabulous! I don’t even add sugar. The condensed milk makes it sweet enough for me, and I have a serious sweet tooth. Taste YUMMY with cinnamon sticks too! I’m going to try vanilla beans next.
