Ingredients

  1. 1 small minced onion
  2. 3 cloves minced garlic
  3. One 1/4-inch piece peeled fresh ginger
  4. 6 ounces lemon juice
  5. 6 ounces olive oil
  6. 3 ounces soy sauce
  7. 3 ounces dark rum
  8. 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper
  9. 2 tablespoons sugar
  10. 2 tablespoons salt
  11. 5 chicken breasts
  12. 1 cup toasted sesame seeds
  13. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  14. Sesame Noodles, recipe follows
  15. Soy-Ginger Vinaigrette, recipe follows
  16. Mesclun Greens
  17. Spicy Apricot Sauce, recipe follows
  18. 1 pound fresh angel hair pasta
  19. 1/2 bunch cilantro, leaves chopped
  20. 1 bunch chopped scallions
  21. 2 tablespoons olive oil
  22. 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  23. 1/4 cup soy sauce
  24. 1/4 cup lemon juice
  25. 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  26. 1/2 cup olive oil
  27. 1/2 cup canola oil
  28. 1 ounce boiling water
  29. 2 cups apricot glaze
  30. 1 cup balsamic vinaigrette
  31. 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  32. 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
  33. 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  34. 1/2 cup mirin

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, combine the onion, garlic, and ginger and pulse to mince. Place in a bowl and combine with the lemon juice, olive oil, soy sauce, rum, crushed red pepper, sugar, and salt. Shake, or stir well, before use. Cut the chicken breast into 2-inch strips. Put in plastic bag or tub with marinade. Marinate in the refrigerator overnight.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  3. Combine sesame seeds with the flour. Dredge marinated chicken strips in the flour-sesame mixture. In a skillet, heat enough canola oil to lightly coat the bottom of the skillet until hot, but not smoking. Cook chicken strips, on both sides until golden brown. Transfer to a shallow roasting pan and finish in the oven.
  4. To assemble:
  5. Toss the Sesame Noodles with some Soy-Ginger Vinaigrette and some fresh mesclun greens. Place the noodle salad on a plate and top with the cooked sesame chicken. Drizzle some Spicy Apricot Sauce over the chicken. Garnish with pickled ginger and a side of the apricot dipping sauce.
  6. Cook angel hair pasta in boiling, salted water for 2 minutes or until al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking. Add the cilantro, scallions, olive, and sesame oils. Combine well.
  7. Combine all ingredients, except for the water, in a blender. Blend for 30 seconds. Then add the water and blend for another 10 seconds.
  8. Put all ingredients in a saucepan, and heat until the glaze melts. Whisk until smooth, and serve at room temperature. Add water if it gets too thick.

Pretty time consuming, but the result is worth the effort.

This recipe is really good and easily modified (in case you know, you misread the recipe and don’t marinate it or forget the lemon juice!)

It was DELICIOUS!

Licking a salt stick would taste better.

This recipe took much longer than the 30 minutes listed as prep time, and certainly takes more than 6 minutes of cooking time.

The marinade left the chicken so salty that we chose to throw it away – not even fit for the dog.

The sesame noodles were passable, but other ercipes are superior. The apricot sauce was OK, but since the chicken was inedible we found no use for it.

I can’t give it 5 stars, since I changed a LOT about the recipe. I used the basic framework for flavors, but tinkered a lot with quantities (5 chicken breasts is a LOT in our house–I think I used 2, and we got several servings!). Made a rather different dipping sauce using plum sauce as the base, and tossed the fried chicken strips in this sauce. Used linguine and a variation of the vinaigrette, resulting in really yummy noodles!

not worth the time and hassle it took to make. A ton of steps, a ton of dirty pots. Very yummy…but I think it would be even more enjoyable in the restaurant in Vermont…where someone else has to make it!!

I made this Spicy sesame chicken dish and although it was time consuming, my man loved it! It was a great beginning to a very romantic evening. This is definitely a recipe I’ll keep in my box!

This was a expensive, and time consuming recipe for chx strips. I never make it again. Tiffany from Shorewood, Il.
