Ingredients

  1. 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  2. 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  3. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  4. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  5. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  6. 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  7. 1 gala apple, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
  8. 1 granny smith apple, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
  9. 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  10. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  11. 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  12. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  13. 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  14. 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  15. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  16. 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  17. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  18. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  19. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  20. 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  21. 4 ounces crumbled halva or marzipan, optional but highly recommended
  22. A few pinches of sprinkles, optional

Instructions

  1. For the crust: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line an 8-by-8-inch square pan with enough parchment paper to have 1-inch wings on 2 sides.
  2. In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, combine the butter, sugar, vanilla and salt and beat on medium until pale and fluffy. Reduce to low, add both flours and mix to combine. Press evenly into the pan and bake for 10 minutes. Let cool slightly, about 10 minutes, while you make the filling.
  3. For the filling: In a large bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice. Sprinkle in the flour, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and salt and toss to combine. Arrange evenly on top of the crust.
  4. For the crumble: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter and mix with your hands until crumbly. Sprinkle all over the apples. Sprinkle on the halva or marzipan and sprinkles, if using. Bake until the crumbles begin to brown, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool in the pan completely, about 1 hour and then slice into bars. Enjoy!

This was so good!! I didn’t add the halva (kids wouldn’t like it) or sprinkles (didn’t have any). It tasted just like a McDonald’s apple pie. My kids want me to make it again!

These were delicious! I’ve been hearing about halva everywhere lately and wanted to try it in some recipes. It pairs beautifully with apples and the warm spices. I did cut down on the amount of butter in the crust based on some comments of other reviewers, and I’m glad I did. One stick of butter for the crust was perfect.

OMG!!!!  Fabulous.  I love halva so I doubled it to 8 oz which was great!  Next time I think 6 oz will be enough.  Apples, warm spices and halva and a match made in heaven.

That turned out DELICIOUS!

These were too delicious! I cut them into 24 small bars as they were quite rich. Next time I’ll try using less butter in the crust. Maybe 8 T.

Fabulous! Love everything about these bars. Used crumbled marzipan and red and white candied sugar on top!

These are AMAZING! They taste better the next day, in my opinion. I didn’t use the halva or marzipan and they were delicious without it.

These did not work for us. The crust was so buttery and didn’t seem to cook so it was like eating buttery flour. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be? We didn’t like it.
