Yield: 4 dumplings

Ingredients

  1. 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, such as Pepperidge Farm, thawed
  2. 4 small tart apples
  3. 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  4. 1/4 cup raisins
  5. 2 tablespoons chopped pecans
  6. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  7. Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  8. 4 teaspoons butter
  9. 1 large egg whisked with 1 tablespoon water, for the egg wash
  10. 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
  11. 2 tablespoons butter
  12. 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  13. Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. For the dumplings: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll the pastry into a 12-inch square and cut into four 6-inch squares. Peel and core the apples, then place 1 on each square of pastry.
  3. Add the brown sugar, raisins, pecans, cinnamon and lemon zest and juice to a bowl and mix. Pile some of the mixture into the hollowed-out core of each apple. Top each with a teaspoon of butter. Egg wash the edges of the pastry squares, then bring the corners of each pastry square up and fold over each apple, pressing to seal the dumplings.
  4. Transfer the dumplings to the prepared baking sheet and brush with the remaining egg wash. Bake until the apples are tender and the pastry is golden brown, about 30 minutes.
  5. For the glaze: Add the confectioners’ sugar, butter, lemon juice and 1/4 cup water to a small pan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  6. Brush the glaze over the baked dumplings and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Exactly how I make them minus the pecans. I serve them with a warm brandy sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You really can’t top this. Everyone thinks you slaved for hrs ( meanwhile it was minimal work) the applause and satisfaction you get serving these to guests is totally worth it.

I have different kind of apples using plus don’t have lemons so using oranges. I learned many years ago to “use what you have”. I’m going to place puff pastry in large muffin pan, egg wash, fill with the yummy filling. Sprinkle with a little sugar. I have Jared carmal sauce, heat in microwave pour over when hot. Yummy

How long will the Apple dumpling
puff pastry hold up after baking? We’re going to a family gathering and I was hoping to make them a day
ahead of time.
ahead and then still keep their quality.

Absolutely delicious and beyond flavorful!! I noticed a previous review that mentioned that all the yummy flavor was concentrated in the core, so I decided to cut the apples up and stir them into the brown sugar mixture. I filled the pastry shells with the apple mixture and topped each with a square of butter before pressing the dumplings shut. They turned out perfect and tasted like heaven when paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I will definitely be making this recipe again!!

Great fast recipe, glad I tried it! And a negative comment I saw maybe had bad Granny Smiths apples. We love 99 percent of Ree’s recipes!!!
