Yield: 8 to 10 servings

Ingredients

  1. Salted butter, for the baking dish
  2. 8 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  3. 1 cup granulated sugar
  4. 1 heaping tablespoon all-purpose flour
  5. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  6. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  7. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  8. 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  9. 1 cup packed brown sugar
  10. 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  11. 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  12. Pinch of kosher salt
  13. 1 stick (8 tablespoons) salted butter, melted
  14. Ice cream or frozen custard, for serving

Instructions

  1. For the apples: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish with butter.
  2. Arrange the apple slices in the prepared baking dish in an even layer. In a bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples, then pour 1/2 cup water over top.
  3. For the topping: In a separate bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and a pinch of salt. Stir while drizzling in the melted butter. Sprinkle the topping in an even layer over the apples.
  4. Bake until the topping is slightly crisp and golden brown, about 43 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature on its own, with ice cream or with frozen custard.

Soupy and very little flavor. I do not recommend it at all.

Just made for Thanksgiving dessert and was instant winner—even for my 2 picky teenagers. Used a mandoline to slice the apples evenly, and DEFINITELY DO NOT ADD WATER!!! The apples will caramelize nicely to make their own syrup. This is an instant classic now for Thanksgiving.
Thank you Ree!

Made this yesterday for a birthday party and it was loved by all. After reading several other reviews I did make a couple changes : I added a large pinch of allspice to the cinnamon flour mixture and tossed the apples in it before putting in pan. I also omitted adding any water and it turned out great.

2 stars because the taste is good, but it’s soup like some of the other reviews have stated. Wish I would’ve read and omitted because I even questioned it when I was making it. Does she do this in the show? I don’t remember seeing it and just watched the episode today.

Not crisp at all! This tasted great but was soupy. Would omit the 1/2 cup of water next time.

Am I the only person for whom this recipe didn’t work at all? The title of this recipe should be apple soup with gloopy oats on top. My only change was to use Jonathan apples instead of Granny Smith, and I ended up with watery apple soup. (Maybe Jonathan’s contain more water than Granny Smiths?) That, plus two full cups of sugar on top of this much fruit and it’s just way too sweet. I love Ree’s Blueberry Nectarine crisp and should have just used that recipe instead. This one is a disaster

I made this for a group and it was absolutely delicious!!! The only thing I changed was I added a level tsp of cinnamon and a little allspice! It is sooo good!

Very easy to make and delicious. Definitely needs ice cream.

5 stars for being easy. I cut the apples up and mixed it together with the flour salt sugar cinnamon to coat apples and poured it into a liberally butter coated glass baking dish. I used a pastry cutter to cut in the butter flour sugar mixture into pea sized chunks and sprinkled in a little cinnamon. I like cinnamon.
