Jalapeño Cheese Puffs

  4.6 – 114 reviews

For those of us who adore jalapeo poppers, there are jalapeo wontons. These cheese and pepper-filled wontons are deep-fried.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Servings: 15

Ingredients

  1. 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  2. 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  3. 1 (4 ounce) can diced jalapeno peppers
  4. 3 green onions, diced
  5. 2 cloves garlic, pressed
  6. 1 (16 ounce) package wonton wrappers
  7. 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix cream cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeño peppers, green onions, and garlic in a medium bowl.
  2. Fill wonton wrappers with approximately 1 teaspoon of cream cheese mixture each. Fold wrappers into triangles and press the edges with a moistened fork to seal.
  3. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large, deep skillet. Drop 4 wontons at a time into the oil and quickly fry, turning once. Remove when golden brown and drain on paper towels.
  4. We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

Lightly Sprayed with canola oil and baked for a somewhat healthier version.

I had three teenagers sitting at my kitchen table while I made these puffs. They ate them as fast as I could make them! Two weeks later, they are still talking about those ‘poppers’ being the best food they have had ay Nanny’s house in awhile. I picked up everything I need to make another batch tomorrow.

These were amazing and our my all time favorite appetizer. Nice way to use up fresh jalapenos and wonton wraps!

These were just ok for me kind of bland even after adding spices. I wouldn’t make these again..sorry

I usually hate reviews where extras are added or substitutes but I could not find my wonton wrappers came up missing… I made the filling and put in empanada wrappers that I cut into triangles and my family ate them as they came out of pan. What a great combination!

These were delicious! So crispy and fun to eat! However, it took a lot longer to assemble them than I had planned. I did a shallow fry to conserve oil, and set them on paper towel to crisp. Keeping warm in the oven is great, but put them on a rack to keep them crisp.

Amazing! Added a little seasoned burger to some of them. Only thing I did was dampened the whole wonton edge lightly before I closed them, then pressed to seal.

Better with bacon! Also very good with chipotle sauce mixed in!

These are very time consuming, but ver6 delicious. I’m going to make several different fillings next time. Thanks for the recipe.

I used two fresh jalapeños, left out the other cheese and just used cream cheese, garlic and green onions. I baked them at 375 for 8 mins per side. They were good, spicy just the way I like them 🙂

I made this as IS and fried it, hands down best! Labor intensive but great for parties (easy to freeze ahead too). THANK YOU!

These were fantastic! I did have to moisten the outside edge of the wonton wrapper in order to get them to stay together. A “moistened fork” was not enough. I used cheddar-monterey jack because that was all I could find, but the flavors seemed perfectly balanced and everyone in the family liked them, no matter what level of spice they preferred. They weren’t as brown as they were in the picture when they were done, but the toasty flavor of the fried wontons goes really well with the rest of the ingredients. I will definitely make them again – probably tomorrow! Lol! And for a long time to come!

These turned out very well. I do not recommend trying to be efficient by making the filling in advance though. The stuff turned very hard sitting in the fridge and it was difficult to get it out of the bowl. I ended up using the microwave to soften it before I could stuff my wrappers.

Great little appetizer. Prepared them for a family football gathering at our daughters home. Too much food there and ran out of time so I froze them uncooked on a couple plates while there. Tossed them in a ziplock bag as I left. I cooked them up this last Sunday and they were delicious, perfect, and disappeared in minutes. I made just a few changes, as other reviewers suggested, I used fresh Jalapeños that I had on hand, added 3 strips cooked chopped bacon and also used a shredded blend of Mexican cheeses. Going to a Super Bowl party this Sunday, making them up and freezing them today! FYI, wonton wraps are usually always found in the produce cooler section for those new to using them. An excellent easy recipe, thanks for sharing it!

Found this flavourless. Very disappointing. Glad i made it ahead of time as i was going to take it to a Christmas party and would have been embarassed.

I made these for a work get together and they were the first to go. A little time consuming but worth it. I will definitely make them again.

These fry up very quickly so I recommend you have them all assembled and ready to go before you begin frying. I made them in advanced and into envelopes so I stored them seam side down. They sealed wonderfully and never split. If you make them into envelopes, start by frying them on the un-seamed side for about a minute before flipping them over. I used fresh jalapeno and wish I had added more, but they made a great little appetizer.
