Instant Pot Popcorn

With this simple recipe, you can make popcorn in your Instant Pot. I decided to try making oil-cooked popcorn in the Instant Pot since I enjoy the taste but dislike the mess it leaves on my burner. There was absolutely no greasy splatter, and the coconut oil gives it that theatrical flavor.

Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  2. ½ cup unpopped popcorn
  3. salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Turn on a multi-functional pressure cooker (such as Instant Pot) and select Sauté function. When the display indicates the pot is hot, add coconut oil and let it melt.
  2. Add popcorn and stir with a rubber spatula until kernels are coated. Wait 30 seconds and stir again; kernels should be making a sizzling sound at this point. Cover pot with the glass lid and cook for 5 minutes. Cancel Sauté mode and let sit until kernels have completely stopped popping, about 1 minute.
  3. Transfer popcorn to a large bowl and sprinkle with salt.
  4. Plan on more unpopped kernels than you would cooking it on the stove due to not being able to shake the Instant Pot around on the heat source like you would a pot on the stove burner. While there is more waste, popcorn is cheap and having no oil splatter is worth it to me.
  5. I listed salt as a generic seasoning but feel free to experiment with flavors such as powdered cheese, ranch powder, Frank’s Red Hot seasoning, etc.

IP makes excellent popcorn and eliminates one more appliance. BUT, I killed my pot on the last batch. I unplugged the pot after I was done popping the corn. Everything seemed fine, but today I get no light on the display. Probably burnt the fuse. Pot was full of soup ingredients — well, there is still the crock pot in the cupboard as back up.

First time making popcorn in the Instapot and it worked like a charm! I shook the Instapot a few times while it was popping and almost all of my seeds popped. I have the Instapot glass lid which I think helped. At the end I added some melted butter and sea salt. It was perfect!

I’ve made it twice and this recipe has worked flawlessly. Every kernel has popped. I enjoy making my own popcorn. It is one of my favorite snacks. I topped this batch with some grated parmesan cheese.

I did follow the instructions and the popcorn that popped was good., i did use the optional salt for cooking. There were 1/2 of the kernels un popped. I quickly transferred them to a microwave popper for them to pop,

I did like this popcorn, even though I forgot to add my popcorn salt to the oil this time which was my error, not the recipe. Much better than microwave popcorn! I do not own a glass lid for my Instant Pot. I made do with a glass lid from other cookware. My IP is the simple version 6 quart. I started a timer on my stove when the first 2 kernels popped. Listened to the popping to almost stop which was less than 3 minutes. Turned off the IP ,removed the lid, dumped the popcorn into a large bowl. Almost No unpopped kernels, even though my popcorn was a bit old. I will make this again! Thanks!

Hey, this really worked! I used grapeseed oil and added salt to the oil. I didn’t let it go for the full five minutes because I was worried about burning. I waited until there were about three seconds between each pop; there was still 1 minute, 45 seconds on the timer. I turned off the heat and left the lid on for the rest of the time. Great! Oh, and I don’t have a glass lid either but it was fine.

This works pretty well. I don’t have a see-through lid, but it works with a regular one. I topped mine with melted habanero lime butter. Next time, I’ll spray with chipotle oil. It was delicious. And no splatter mess!
