Home-Fried Cheese Sticks

  4.6 – 82 reviews

Making homemade fried cheese sticks at home is simple and affordable with this method. Wonderful flavor and subtle crispness. More value for your money and convenient freezer storage for cravings. I produce two batches: one for the ‘now’ and one for the future. Serve with the dipping sauce of your choice.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Additional Time: 2 hrs
Total Time: 2 hrs 35 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 48 cheese sticks

Ingredients

  1. 24 (1 ounce) sticks string cheese
  2. 5 eggs, beaten
  3. 3 cups Italian seasoned bread crumbs
  4. 1 quart vegetable oil for frying, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Remove string cheese sticks from plastic wrappings and cut the strings in half crosswise.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place eggs in a bowl and bread crumbs into a large shallow bowl.
  3. Dip cheese stick halves into egg and roll in bread crumbs to completely coat the sticks; place breaded cheese sticks onto the prepared baking sheet. Allow cheese sticks to stand at room temperature for about 5 minutes to set, and repeat dipping in egg and bread crumbs to form a thick coating. Freeze breaded cheese sticks for at least 2 hours.
  4. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  5. Deep fry cheese sticks, a few at a time, until the coating is golden brown and crisp and the cheese is soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Let sticks drain on paper towels; cool slightly and serve warm.
  6. The nutrition data for this recipe includes the full amount of the breading ingredients. The actual amount of the breading consumed will vary. We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount will vary depending on cooking time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

I was SO looking forward to this. First, I followed the recipe exactly (sort of rude to rate a recipe that is different from the recipe given). I used Walmart’s cheese sticks (maybe that was the mistake). However, the cheese entirely melted out of the first batch @ 5 minutes leaving only a hollow bread shell and a gooey mess in the fryer. I started to reduce the cooking time to 1:30 @ 350* (give or take 10* based on Thermoworks thermometer) and while they came out best (fairly golden and cheese intact), there was hardly any flavor. Everyone agreed they were “OK” but didn’t want again. Can not recommend the recipe as it is is given. Maybe a different cheese (maybe real curds instead Walmart’s Mozz. cheese sticks??) and more flavor and more accurate cooking time/temp info. Really do not see how this got as many positive reviews as it did. Sorry.

I added Italian seasoning to the bread crumbs and it was delish. I only wish I doubled the recipe because my 3 kids wanted more!

When it comes to following some recipes, if I think something needs added or changed that’s what I’ll do, the cheese sticks needed an extra boost of flavor so I added some hot pepper flakes, also with the pizza dipping sauce, I added extra virgin olive oil, hot pepper flakes, garlic powder or crushed garlic, just put my on twist to the recipe and made it my own.

Great recipe. Next time I’m probably gonna lower the temp of the oil because I almost burnt most of them while frying.

Really good, but a lot of work and expense for cheese sticks

I made these for Super Bowl yesterday and they turned out absolutely amazing!!! Mine literally only took about a minute in the fryer though, maybe because of the cheese I used…I don’t care though the quicker they came out the better!!!

a little confused on the frying part, but for the most part they turned out pretty good!

I may have done something wrong, but I found these to be seriously lacking in flavor. If I hadn’t made a super tasty marinara sauce, these would have been a waste. With that said, they were a beautiful color and texture, and were perfect otherwise.

It was good.

I got a little frustrated preparing these because the egg accumulated in the bread crumbs and made them clumpy which made them not stick to the cheese well, I ran out of egg , and I ended up with way more bread crumbs than I needed (I’ll probably half them next time.) However, the finished product was absolutely delicious. I used plain bread crumbs and added salt, pepper, garlic, basil and oregano to my liking. I didn’t know how to measure the temperature of the oil, so I just set the burner to medium heat and cooked them til they browned and the cheese started to ooze out. Everyone raved about how good they were and came back for seconds, thirds and fourths!

Super yummy as written, but I can’t help but laugh while reading some of the reviews complaining about fat content. it is fried cheese after all.

Subbed crushed Ritz crackers for bread crumbs and deep fried in olive oil. They were great. This recipe is a keeper. They’re really good dipped in homemade honey mustard.

Great recipe. Froze for 2 hrs or so before frying. Perfectly cooked. Might try baking next time.

They’re delicious but time consuming to make. Next time I make them I will probably do a large quantity and freeze them after I cook them so I can warm them in the oven when we want munchies!

I will never buy these pre-made again!! Part 2 of 2 of my review. I fried them while they were frozen so they browned faster than the cheese melted so I put them in the oven with the stuffed mushrooms I was making. I made a lot and put the rest in the freezer for the next time craving strikes you know later tonight. 😉 thank you for this fantastic recipe.

Great directions and great recipe! My kids ate every single one. Be careful when making these, your kids will not want to eat the main course!

This is how it’s done, and I’ve got good news – you can use cheddar, mozzarella, colby, or any similar cheese cut into strips about the same size as string cheese. Pay attention while they are cooking and when you see cheese starting to seep from the crust on any of the sticks, they’re done.

My family loved these! Wanted more! Crispy in a good way- we fried in a pan on stove.

Seriously, so good!! I just made these for some some friends and they are AMAZING. A new Game Day regular!

The bread crumbs didn’t always evenly stick, so I rolled them in a little flour before the second dredging. My husband and I loved them. Yummy. Thanks for the recipe

Very easy and the kids LOVED it. Thank you!
