Ingredients
- 2 cups dark brown sugar
- 1 cup dark soy sauce
- 1 cup teriyaki sauce
- 1 cup honey hickory barbeque sauce (Optional)
- 1 drop black food coloring, or as needed
- 4 pounds chicken wings
Instructions
- Whisk brown sugar, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and barbeque sauce together in a large glass bowl until sugar is dissolved. Stir black food coloring in small amounts into the mixture until you get the desired dark color. Liberally pierce the wings with a fork; add to the sauce.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour to overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Pour the chicken and sauce into a large baking dish.
- Bake the chicken in the preheated oven until no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear, about 1 hour. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone should read 165 degrees F (74 degrees C).

I didn’t use food colouring. These were my son’s favorite. He’d probably drink the sauce if allowed.
This marinated for the day & it was delicious!! My family all loved it & it went great with my Halloween veggies
Awesome recipe the kids got a huge kick out of it. Even took it a step further and made “rotten potatoes “. Thanks for sharing!
Made these last year for work and I now have had many request to make them again. They were very easy to do and tasted very good too.
Delicious, juicy and very tasty.
While these were okay. I thought the whole theme of the idea grand. I had to add several upon several drops to get the really dark black look because in the marinating…they didn’t look all the black to me, dark with a greenish look to them. The sauce was very zippy. I think if my kids want these again, I’d knock down the teriyaki and soy sauce just a bit. Other then that, my kids thought there were just fine.
Yummy!!!
I ended up needing several drops of color more than called for but otherwise followed the recipe. It tasted ok, although a little unappetizing where the food coloring made the fatty parts of the skin look…well just very unappetizing. My daughter loved them but I think next time I’ll try to remove the skins.
Awesome Recipe!!wasn’t hard to do and was delicious!!
Season these to your own taste – such as more or less sugar, low sodium soy sauce, add garlic, ginger, honey – whatever your family & friends prefer, but the key to getting them dark is the combo of soy (and/or teriyaki) along with the black food coloring. Have fun with it!
