Total: 1 hr
Active: 30 min
Yield: 12 egg rolls

Ingredients

  1. 12 wonton wrappers
  2. 12 slices salami
  3. 4 string cheese sticks, cut into thirds
  4. 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  5. 1 egg, beaten
  6. Vegetable oil, for frying
  7. 1 cup jarred marinara sauce, warmed

Instructions

  1. Working one wrapper at a time, fold a piece of salami in half and place it diagonally on a wrapper. Top with a piece of string cheese and a pinch of oregano–the cheese ends should point in the direction of 2 opposite wonton corners. Brush the edges of the wrapper with beaten egg. Orient the wrapper in a diamond, with the cheese parallel to you. Pull one corner of the wrapper up and over the cheese. Tuck in the side corners and roll the wrapper up like a package, making sure the edges and corners are well sealed. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  2. Place the egg rolls on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Fill a Dutch with 2 inches of vegetable oil; fit with a deep-frying thermometer. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.
  4. Fry the egg rolls in batches of 3 to 5 until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes, turning with a slotted spoon for even browning. Remove to a paper towel-lined tray to drain.
  5. Serve the egg rolls with warm marinara alongside, for dipping.

These were a hit last year at Xmas eve. For an appetizer. Making them again in Dec. for a wedding celebration party for my granddaughter. Will make lots! Recipe is perfect as it is.

Can these be cooked in the air fryer

Who knew such a simple recipe could be so good? These are so yummy! Salami, cheese sticks, and oregano all work really well together. I didn’t eat it with marinara- I don’t think it’s needed! It has lots of flavors on its own!

Outstanding! I used larger wonton wrappers, so the filling got lost. I will get smaller ones next time or double the filling. Pepperoni, prosciutto, thinly sliced roast beef would all work. As far as reheating, I’d suggest a pan fry or bake them uncovered to get the filling to heat up. Over all these are our new apps for football season. Slice them open lengthwise, you can double the servings for just appetizers.

Dying to make these, but has anyone reheated leftovers?

A question, please? What can we substitute the salami with? Any beer or lamb suggestions???

A question. Can these be baked instead of fried?

Yum! We used Genoa salami, so good we did not even dip in the marinara

This is a question, not a review.  Can these be fried, and held in the oven so that you have them ready when company comes?
Timothy Martinez
I used pepperoni instead of salami but they are now a new family favorite!  Great idea.
