Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  2. 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  3. 10 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
  4. Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  5. 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  6. 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  7. 10 ounces 93% lean ground turkey
  8. 6 ounces lean ground beef sirloin
  9. 8 slices multigrain bread
  10. 8 thin slices Monterey jack or Swiss cheese (2 to 3 ounces)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring, until soft, 2 to 3 minutes. Push to one side of the skillet; add the mushrooms and cook until browned, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then mix the mushrooms and onions together and cook until the onions are golden, about 10 more minutes. Add the vinegar and 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and keep warm.
  2. Meanwhile, mix the turkey, beef and the remaining 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Shape into 4 equal-size oval patties.
  3. Wipe out the skillet, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and place over medium-high heat. Season the patties with salt and pepper and cook until browned on the bottom, about 4 minutes. Flip and cook through, 1 to 2 more minutes.
  4. Divide the onions and mushrooms among 4 bread slices; top with a slice of cheese, a patty, another slice of cheese and another bread slice. Wipe out the skillet; add 1 tablespoon olive oil and place over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches in two batches until the bread is toasted and the cheese melts, 1 to 2 minutes per side, adding the remaining 2 teaspoons oil as needed.

What a handful of sandwich! Very good, I used rye bread because that’s how I’ve had them at restaurants. Highly recommend. I had a lot of onions and mushrooms left over . Oh yeah, I only used ground beef. No Turkey

Wow…Patty Melts have grown up! I can remember sitting at Woolworth lunch counter with my Aunt, we ordered one Patty Melt to share and two mugs of tomato soup. The sandwiches consisted of rye bread, crispy meat patty and cheese of choice with dill pickle chips on the side. The above recipe is really good, I did leave out the beef, the onions and mushrooms send it straight into Unami land! Thanx for the memories! Happy Fall!raf

I’m not sure why everyone always thinks that just because you’re using ground turkey it’s lower in fat. Check your labels. Most are actually higher in fat than lean ground beef. Just want to make that clear. As for this, it’s okay. The vinegar is an unusual twist. It definitely needs a bit of salt and pepper, but I wouldn’t add much more. As Bobby Flay says, adding a bunch of extras to the meat is turning it into meatloaf.

Yum! I do agree that this turkey/ground beef combo is a great idea! You get the juiciness of a beef burger but with a reduction in fat and calories. Fabulous! My only complaint was that the meat needed a bit more flavor, the S/P and Worcestershire just wasn’t enough. I see someone added Montreal seasoning to the meat…something like that is probably a good suggestion,as the burger itself did lack a bit of flavor. We did a Monterrey Jack and Pepper Jack combo for the two slices of cheese (one slice of each, which added a nice kick. Easy recipe…a definite keeper. :

I found this recipe to be tasteless and a waste of money. I was really looking forward to it but was disappointed in the end.

Very good. I seasoned the meat with some montreal seasoning to added a little more worcestershire for flavor. I also took some thin sliced ham and and layered it between one slice of bread and cheese. Turned out great.

Love this recipe! I love ground turkey, but my husband seems to have an aversion to it. So I was thrilled when I saw this blend of turkey and beef. I figured I could slide it past him. Sure enough, after tasting it he asked what it was, as it was “Amazing”. I might be able to turn him into a turkey lover yet with recipes like this.

Add this recipe to your rotation. I followed it exactly except I added a little cayenne pepper to the meat mixture, and crushed red pepper to the onion & mushroom mix. Also, I didn’t add that much ground beef (like the size of a large meatball).
