Why do people think anything and everything mixed with rum qualifies as a Mai Tai? If you look at all the Mai Tai recipes listed here – except for the fact that this exact same recipe is listed like five times – you find that the only thing they have in common is they contain rum.
If you want a real Mai Tai that approximates Trader Vic’s original, mix in a cocktail shaker: 2 oz Gold to Med Amber Aged Rum, 1/2 oz each Orange Curacao & Orgeat (almond) Syrup, Juice of one lg Lime ( 1 oz.) and crushed ice. Shake and pour unstrained into a glass. Garnish w/ mint and 1/2 the lime shell.
I made this drink for my daughter’s birthday. It is delicious. i did not make the sugar rim with the eggs. everyone loved it . the third time i made it i used Malibu rum made with coconut and it adds a kick super delicious. i now make it quite often.
Tasty but pretty strong.
