Yield: 1 drink

Ingredients

  1. 3/4 cup sugar
  2. 1 1/2 cups water
  3. 1 large hand ginger, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch coins/chunks
  4. Bar sugar
  5. Freshly grated nutmeg
  6. 2 ounces good quality tequila or reposado (recommended: Cabo Wabo)
  7. 1 lime, juiced, plus lime wedges for garnish

Instructions

  1. Bring sugar and water up to a light simmer and cook until all of the sugar is dissolved. Add ginger and steep for 30 minutes. Pour ginger-simple syrup into blender and puree. Strain out pulp and store in a tightly sealed jar or bottle. Will keep for several weeks in the refrigerator.
  2. Pour some bar sugar onto small plate and grate a pinch of nutmeg on top, mix well.
  3. Add tequila, lime juice, 5 ounces ginger-simple syrup and ice to cocktail shaker and give it a good shake. Run lime wedge around rim of glass and dip in sugar/nutmeg mixture, add ice and pour in contents of shaker, grate a little nutmeg on top and serve with a wedge of lime.

This is a laughable recipe. I love me some Guy, but the proportions are very bad.

It’s awesome! Only margarita I drink.

This is a great drink! I made 4x the recipe and made a pitcher of the margaritas for a party. I cut back on the simple syrup a bit – for each drink – used 2 ounces tequila, 1 ounce lime juice and 4 ounces of the ginger simple syrup. The freshly ground nutmeg on the rim and sprinkled on top added a nice, unexpected flavor. I would definitely will make this again!

I stumbled over this recipe almost two years ago when I was searching for the perfect poolside drink. I love it and it has always been popular with my guests. After just rereading the recipe, I realize that over time, I have modified the ratio of syrup to tequila. I make them a little stronger than the recipe calls for.

This is delicious!! I haven’t been a huge fan of margaritas, too sweet and thick usually. This is light and unusual tasting. Loved the ginger, loved the nutmeg in the sugared rim. I am making this one my signature cocktail. Ok Guy? Definitely give this one a try.

I am a bartender and use alot of Guys reciepes for specials at my bar. This one is one of the best although it won’t be used as a special (too expensive to make). My friends were over for dinner and cocktails and the drink was the rave of the party! Thanks again for another wonderful cocktail Guy!!!

My husband and I love a margaritas however thought we would change it up and give these a try. We loved them! They are light and refreshing, easy to make and unique to serve. If you are not a huge fan ginger these might not be the drink for you. We will definitely be serving these for next party! Thanks!

If you like ginger, this is a good drink to try. The recipe didn’t say how much ginger to use, and I wasn’t sure if “hand ginger” was the same as ginger root, but I used a pretty big chunk of ginger root and I doubled the recipe because I just made a pitcher of margaritas. The drink came out sweet, but spicy, too. Like I said, if you like ginger, then you’ll probably like this.
