Want to stop discarding stale bananas? This recipe will have your kids coming back for more while using up those bananas in a moist, tasty, and low-fat way. There is no white sugar present. Applesauce, non-fat Greek yogurt, and plain old maple syrup all work wonderfully as substitutions for the traditional banana bread recipe.

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup white sugar
  2. ½ cup milk
  3. ½ cup heavy cream
  4. ¼ cup butter
  5. 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  6. 2 tablespoons milk
  7. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  8. 2 tart apples – peeled, cored and sliced
  9. 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  10. ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  11. 1 (15 ounce) package pastry for double-crust pie
  12. ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
  13. 1 tablespoon milk
  14. ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  15. 1 tablespoon butter, softened

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup cream, and 1/4 cup butter. Heat until butter is melted, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla; stir into saucepan. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). In a medium bowl, combine the apples, flour, and cinnamon. Mix well.
  3. Line a 9 inch pie pan with pie dough. Pour thickened filling mixture into pastry-lined pie pan. Arrange apple mixture evenly over filling. Top with second crust, seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in top crust.
  4. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Cool for at least 30 minutes.
  5. In small bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 tablespoon softened butter. Blend until smooth; pour evenly over warm pie. Refrigerate for AT LEAST 1 1/2 hours before serving (longer is better).

We loved this pie – however, I made my own pie crust (Grandma’s Secret Pie Crust from this site). I wanted a deep dish pie so I doubled the apples and added 10 minutes to the baking time. I mistakenly put the apples in the pie shell first and then poured the filling over the top of the apples and it still came out great.

I could see why an apple pie purist wouldn’t like this recipe. I thought it was excellent and I will make this again. The only things I did different were a lattice shell topping and I used 3/4 teaspoons of cinnamon in the apples. I’m glad that I did not double the icing as some suggested ( I drizzled on the lattice top with a spoon). The amount of icing in this recipe is the perfect amount. Any more icing and the pie

This was outstanding! But as usual I read the reviews and couldn’t leave the basic recipe alone. My family likes really flavorful foods, so I really upped the cinnamon, added clove, and CARDAMOM. I used a large pie pan with 4 Granny Smith’s, and could easily have added a fifth, but I like tall pies with lots of fruit.

Every time I make this pie everyone goes nuts!! The vanilla custard is delicious! I make it just as is although depending on the size on the apple, it may need more than 2…I usually at least 3 if not 4. Give this recipe a try when you’re trying to impress – it’s a winner for sure!

I’ve made this pie several times over the years when I came across it on “All Recipes”. It IS an excellent one for sure. Alterations: Added one more apple, substituted white sugar for BROWN, INCREASED cream & milk slightly & ADDED a heaping handful of butterscotch chips when taken off the stove to cool.

We use three large apples per pie. Definitely double or triple the flour/cinnamon mixture and I like to add dashes or a few sprinkles of allspice, nutmeg and a pinch of ginger to that as well. Finally, we add cinnamon to the glaze and this pie is perfect and has been a part of our family Thanksgiving for the last decade.

Wonderful recipe! Snowed in today so I made this recipe exactly except used 3 Granny Smith apples. Did not have heavy cream so substituted: 3/4 cup milk with 1/4 cup melted butter. Used half of this mixture to substitute for the heavy cream. Came out perfect. Will definitely make this one again.

My twin sister and I entered this pie into a contest we did everything right with the ingredients and the process but unfortunately we lost, we didn’t even place 1st through 3rd but it came out great and tasted amazing!
