Yield: Twelve 5-inch treats, or Twenty four 3-inch treats

Ingredients

  1. Vegetable oil cooking spray
  2. 2 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting
  3. 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  4. 1 tablespoon baking powder
  5. 1 cup low sodium chicken broth
  6. 1 cup creamy peanut butter, at room temperature
  7. 1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Instructions

  1. Place an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. Spray a heavy baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray or line with a silicon baking mat. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oats and baking powder. Stir in the broth and peanut butter until the mixture forms a crumbly dough. Press the dough together to form a ball.
  3. On a lightly floured work surface, knead the dough for 30 seconds until smooth. Roll out the dough into a 10-inch circle, about 1/2-inch thick. Using a bone-shape cookie cutter, cut out bones and place on the prepared baking sheet (any scraps of dough can be formed into a ball and re-rolled). Sprinkle with the Parmesan.
  4. Bake until light golden, 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

It’s a great base recipe and all on it’s own.

Pups loved them and so easy.

My dogs love these and they’re so easy to make. I used a 1 1/2 inch flower shaped cookie cutter which made them the perfect size for my dogs. I also divided the dough in half and put half in the freezer for a later date. It made 140 treats in total. I also HIGHLY recommend choosing a gluten free flour if your dog has arthritis. My 11 year old Golden Border had a severe arthritic reaction to the whole wheat flour.

This might be my new protein bar recipe.

For a few years I have been making a dog cookie recipe from another amazing FN chef not to be named (IG).  But yesterday I found this recipe this recipe by Giada and another from VB that looked interesting. Having nothing better to do, I made small batches of all three and did a taste test with my two big guys! Both of them overwhelmingly preferred the cookies from this recipe by Giada! The recipe from IG was their second favorite. And I had some Milk Bone cookies that came in third. But the recipe from VB seemed to be a bit off-putting to my guys (maybe the sweet potatoes?). Anyway, both of my two Labrador Retrievers, Jake and Mac, would definitely give this recipe a 5 paw rating!!!

Be careful with the kind of broth you use. Most commercial chicken broth sold in stores has onion in it, which is a no-no for dogs. I make my own veg broth without onion or garlic. My dog enjoys these and I feel good giving them to him because I know what is in it.

Substituting whole wheat flour for almond flour, oat flour, or coconut flour since I read wheat & gluten flour is bad for dogs.
