my bitter-green beverage. I created my own recipe because I was unable to locate one online that I liked. I blend it in a Vitamix® 7500 at a speed of 7 or 8 for 35 to 45 seconds, and the result is smooth and palatable. Because I can’t justify wasting away fruit or vegetable pulp, I blend rather than juice. Feel the strength by taking one of these every day! Please let me know your thoughts.

Ingredients

  1. 4 cups old-fashioned oats
  2. 1 cup wheat germ
  3. ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  4. ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder
  5. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  6. resealable sandwich bags

Instructions

  1. Blend oats in a blender until powdery; transfer to a large bowl. Add wheat germ, brown sugar, milk powder, and cinnamon; stir until evenly distributed. Spoon 5 tablespoons oat mixture into 17 individual sandwich bags.
  2. When ready to serve, simply add a baggie of oatmeal mixture to 5 to 8 tablespoons of water (depending how thick you like your oatmeal) in a microwaveable bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Enjoy!

I could see this being very convenient if you have kids or want to take it to the office for yourself. I only blended half the oats; I don’t think I would like all of them blended. I doubled the cinnamon and cut the sugar by more than half.

This has a pretty strong flavor, but that’s just the way my son likes it. With the instant store bought ones, he uses three packets and a tiny bit of water in order to keep the flavor (way too dry for me). You can imagine how quickly he was going through the packets. Sorry, but I did make a minor change which does not negate yours – I skipped the instant milk and used whole milk rather than water to make it. Now just need to figure out other flavor mixtures like the maple and brown sugar.

I cut this recipe in half, just in case it wasn’t a hit with the kids. I followed the recipe exact. I made each kid a bowl this morning, using 1/4 cup of water and microwaving it for a minute and a half. The kids really liked it. This would be a great base recipe to play with and make it personal to your own family.
