Hot Honey

Although it is simple to purchase hot honey, it is also, in my opinion, simple to produce at home. Use it as a glaze on roasted meats or vegetables or to flavor salad dressing. Additionally, you can combine it with soft butter to spread on biscuits. Yum!

Yield: 1 /2 cup

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup honey
  2. 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  3. 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  4. 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  5. ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  6. ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Combine honey, vinegar, red pepper flakes, thyme, smoked paprika, and salt in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature so flavors infuse, about 30 minutes. Store at room temperature in an airtight container.
  2. Vary the flavor profile to suit your tastes. Rosemary sprigs, orange peels, and crushed fennel seeds are all delicious additions.
  3. Strain out the solids if you prefer not to see them in the final dish.

I set it aside to cool, and when my squash rings were done, it was hard as a candied apple. I tried thinning it and heating it again, which worked and was delicious on the squash. Had to put my little saucepan over boiling water to liquidate the hot honey. I think next time I will just keep it warm!

Loved this! Made to drizzle on Bacon Wrapped Shrimp from this site. Amazing and so glad I have some left to use on other dishes! I did halve the red pepper; I think me, my daughter and her husband would have preferred a bit more spice (full red pepper recipe calls for) but the majority of my guests do not like foods with much heat. Everyone liked as made (1/2 red pepper) and will absolutely make again! Likely as written!! Thank you!!

I like thyme but this makes it weird for me. The thyme has a muddy taste and a gritty feel. I will be able to add this to bbq sauce or make spicy baked beans.

12.17.20 … Hot Honey …A little twangy – the vinegar. Slightly sweet – the honey. Duh. I halved the pepper & it was still a medium heat, but it didn’t last – the spicy sensation. It made its mark & left quickly. Yup, hot honey. I used on cooked carrots. Maybe ham would be a better pair-up. Oh, I omitted the thyme.

I left out the thyme (don’t like it) and forgot the salt, but this was still amazing. We had it with egg rolls, Vietnamese spring rolls and on biscuits. I mixed a big spoonful into the peanut sauce for our spring rolls and made it extra yumm. I had never even heard of hot honey before, but I’m glad I have it now!

This is very good and easy to make. I made exactly as written including the thyme and smoked paprika. This will become a staple for me. It is great on bread/biscuits with butter. I will try it as a glaze for grilled salmon soon.
