  4.0 – 233 reviews  • Hot Cheese Dip Recipes

One of the numerous recipes that my mother passed down to me was this one, which was a family favorite throughout the summer.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Servings: 36
Yield: 3 dozen

Ingredients

  1. 4 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  2. 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  3. 3 cups baking mix

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
  2. Mix cheese, sausage, and dry baking mix together in a large bowl until well combined; shape mixture into walnut-sized balls. Place on prepared cookie sheet.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until cooked through, about 12 to 15 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). Serve hot.

I have been making these for over 30 years. My family loves them. This recipe and sausage stuffed mushrooms— are requested as appetizers by my family each holiday

If you use a egg in the mix it will compensate for the dryness due to to much baking mix. Try it this way, promise not to disappoint. Happy Holidays!!

WAY too much baking mix as written. These ended up like biscuits and not the sausage balls I am use to. You could barely taste the sausage. Big disappointment.

Been making these for years! I use hot sausage and after, sprinkle with fresh sage and serve with Maple syrup to dip. Great for any meal, but best for brunch

To everyone saying you can’t get all the baking mix (Bisquik) mixed in, stop being lazy. You just have to keep kneading it. It WILL mix in. Alternatively you can use the bread hook on your stand mixer. But 3-4 cups of baking mix is the right amount. I’ve made these with both amounts.

This recipe is the dryer version….I always make mine with 2 cups baking mix 2 cups cheese ( shredded 8 oz. block) and 2 cups ( one tube) uncooked sausage. Put on some disposable gloves and mix it good.

Family loved it and it became a game and raceday finger food.

Like someone else said, I was in a hurry trusted the rating but my gut said way too much mix. I reduced the mix by one cup and they were still a disaster. Too dry and would not brown.

I went exactly how the recipe said. The mix was like trying to form hay into balls. I added a tad bit of water in order to make the balls. I had 49 pinpon sized balls and still had mix in the bowl. The recipe says 36? After baking they tasted just like flower. I have used Allrecipes for many other things with great results,. This one is a disaster. Perhaps there is a mistake in the recipe listed.

I’ve been making for years & bring them to get togethers. That is, until others took the recipe over & now THEY bring them!! LOL! I say it’s as easy as 1,2,3….becuz I use 1 lb. of sausage, 2 cups of Bisquik…& 3 cups of extra sharp cheddar cheese! Deelish & everyone seems to really enjoy them!
Nathan Anderson
They were delicious. I used a pastry blender to mix it all up.

Very bland. It’s way too much biscuit mix, leaving it dry and tasteless.

Stick to the proportions and resist adding anything extra. My box of Bisquick was a little more than 3 cups, so I dumped it all in. As a result, I ended up needing to moisten it with a little milk. It wasn’t a big deal, but the final product ended up being a little dry. It was my fault.

This recipe is a disaster! I haven’t even tried them yet, only put them in the oven. There is WAY too much baking mix or something because the balls wouldn’t even form correctly. I would suggest using one of the alternates listed in the comments. DO NOT USE THE AMOUNTS LISTED!
Stephen Holland
I made them exactly as posted. They turned out great. I dip them in picante sauce when I eat them. They’re perfect for that!

My grandmother, mother, and me have been making this recipe for decades. It’s absolutely perfect the way it is- but- the recipe should mention that combining the ingredients and kneading the dough take some time, probably about 20 minutes. You MUST make sure that the ingredients are totally combined with almost no baking mix or cheese left at the bottom of the bowl. If you roll the balls a small walnut size and bake about 12-13 minutes they will be perfectly cooked! Set on paper towels after removing from the baking sheet to drain some of the grease. I use Jimmy Dean hot sausage and they are perfect every time!!

Make it every Christmas. So good for breakfast on Christmas morning,

1 lb Jimmy Dean original sausage(don’t pre-cook), 1 cup baking mix, 2 cups cheese, Garlic powder and Dried minced onion. THIS is best combination. You have to use equal parts of baking mix and sausage or they will be really cakey and dry.
Barbara Johnson
I followed the recipe and the sausage balls were too dry and they burned on the bottom after 12 minutes. I think it calls for too much baking mix and cheese. Also, the temperature is too high. Very disappointed.
Allison Hancock
I doubled the sausage to make them a little more hearty. They turned out great!
Alison Martin
This recipe is so simple but it’s classic. There is no need to add anything else. I made some and baked them right away and froze some also.
